Adley Rutschman sets Oregon state record with 63-yard field goal in playoff win

An Oregon high school football player set a state record by making a 63-yard field goal in a playoff game Friday but he plans to play baseball at the college level at Oregon State.

Adley Rutschman, a senior at Sherwood High School, drilled the attempt as time expired in the first half of his team's 41-20 victory over Tigard. The kick was aided by the wind at Rutschman's back. He missed an earlier 41-yard attempt into the wind and made a third attempt from 29 yards.

Rutschman's extraordinary kick beat the 24-year-old state record by 8 yards and was also one of the longest field goals ever made at the prep level nationally.

In an interview with Oregonlive.com, Rutschman made sure to credit holder Adam Vasquez for corralling the snap that skipped off the ground and getting it on the tee in time.

“It’s nice when you’ve got a wind to your back," Rutschman said.

Rutschman is not just a kicker. He also plays running back and linebacker for the team and is a star for the Sherwood baseball team as a third baseman, pitcher and catcher. He has committed to play baseball at Oregon State, where football coach Gary Andersen might already be pestering baseball coach Pat Casey about allowing Rutschman to play a little football, too.

Andersen might want to show Rutschman what salaries look like for NFL place-kickers. Rutschman obviously has that kind of potential.
