The Farmers Insurance Open is history, and ten bucks says nobody's going to remember who won this one three months from now. Oh, but they'll still be talking about Phil Mickelson and his grooves controversy; that's not going anywhere. Still, let's take a brief moment to discuss your winner, one Ben Crane. Best known as a) the guy who plays slower than paint dries and b) one of the guys who allegedly called out Tiger Woods over those "indiscretions" (he didn't), Crane won the FIO for his third PGA victory and his first since 2005. Here, check some video on how it was done:
We're happy for Crane, and Torrey Pines is always lovely this time of year, but let's face it -- the big stories always revolve around the big dogs. Mickelson didn't win -- fumbled his way out of a chance to win, actually -- but the fact that everybody wanted to talk Phil is an indication that storylines, not on-course play, will continue to rule the day in golf. Let's just hope the guys who dominate the headlines are also the guys who dominate the leaderboard.
