Upsets abound on first day of WGC-Accenture Match Play

Day One of the WGC-Accenture Match Play didn't disappoint, as some of golf's biggest names grabbed an early flight home (the opening round had 15 upsets, second-most in tournament history). Here's a rundown of Wednesday's biggest upsets. Enjoy filling out a new bracket!

No. 16 Ernie Els def. No. 1 Luke Donald (5 and 4) — It wasn't exactly Hampton over Iowa State in the NCAA Tournament, but Ernie Els' upset win in the first round was pretty impressive. After getting into the tournament thanks to Phil Mickelson's decision to skip and spend the week with his kids (who are on Spring Break), Els made the most of his match against the number one player in the world, rolling in a birdie on the par-5 8th to take a 1-up lead he'd never relinquish. Donald looked off for most of the day, but you have to give Els credit for seizing the moment and advancing to the next round.

No. 15 Robert Rock def. No. 2 Adam Scott (1-up) — The guy with the perfect head of hair is moving on. In a match that appeared to be swinging Scott's way with four holes to play, Rock birdied the next two to go from 1-down to 1-up going to the 17th hole. Scott missed a three-footer to halve the match on 17, and then missed the green with his approach on 18 that all but ended his chances. Scott has now failed to get out of the first round in three of his last four Accenture Match Play starts.

No. 14 Ryo Ishikawa def. No. 3 Bill Haas (1-up) — Just days after Haas picked up a huge win at Riviera, he watched his chances of posting back-to-back wins go up in smoke, as 20-year-old Ryo Ishikawa grabbed a big upset victory. The golf phenom found himself 3-down after 13 holes to Haas but birdied back-to-back holes to cut the defect to 1-down. Ishikawa then birdied the 17th to square the match before winning the 18th with a par. But don't feel bad for Bill Haas; he's going to be wiping his tears away with $1,000 bills after last week's win.

No. 15 Matteo Manassero def. No. 2 Webb Simpson (3 and 2) — The 19-year-old Italian clearly loves playing in the Accenture Match Play. One year after he made it to the third round before losing the eventual winner Luke Donald, Manassero made 6 birdies in 16 holes to close out Simpson. It was an impressive win for the kid, who never trailed in his match against one of the top players in golf.

Blah, Blah, Blah...........Bottomline, with only the top 65 players on the planet playing, there are NO upsets.

Ernie (68) beat out Donald (1) - that's a bit of an upset...

No real surprises...Donald was all over the place all day, and Els may be ranked 65 in the world but he is a solid match play player. This tournament just shows that there is little difference between players over an 18 hole round...Intersting to see how this progresses. Wouldn't be surprised to see a "dull" final...

Just to show how rankings really don't matter in this format, lower seeded players won 15 of the 32 matches.

Can anyone tell me how you can be world #1 without ever winning a major? Can't win majors, can't win match play against best competition.... not #1.

Ernie Els still got some game left. When he is on his game there are not much better even today.

I seem to remember a day or so ago a certain writer and columnist mindlessly picking Luke Donald to win it all....if your NCAA brackets are any similar, just save the paper and a tree

Els is great at match play, look to Euro play. Enough about that. Had very old school teacher comment on my right leg in back swing not straight enough and right foot on ground longer in forward swing. Reminded him that the more powerful swingers of today, take a more aggessive stance and bring more power on down swing to DRIVE ball 300+++++yds today. You can't use old swing in a phone booth type of swing to get more distance for todays ball and courses, plus puts less stress on spine to free swing club, with shortstop stance, used today. Don't want to burst his bubble that Hogans swing would not hold up today for power drivers. Lot of fundamentals still same but for power must have more compaction in downswing for power.

Love to see the upsets. The #12 seed was the only seed to lose all 4 matches. All other seeds won at least one match.

Luke-World #1, still being consistant this year to------only losing. I think I'm sure I read somewhere a lot that World #52 at the time was defeated by Rocky?

Hate to say it, but I saw Luke losing today. He's looked bad this year and Els can beat anybody in one round. There aren't really any upsets in this format, cause all these guys can play.

During the televised 2010 Rider Cup I couldn't help but notice Graeme McDowell and Luke Donald snickering to themselves when Tiger Woods walked by them. So i took great pleasure watching them both lose yesterday.

Els beating Donald is hardly a shocker, even coming off a sub-par year. To date, Donald has won a grand total of 0 majors to Els 3 majors. Els was won 6 or 7 world matchplay titles.

Yes, it was a shocker becaue ELS has been on the decline. Hello? Luke is number 1 in the world for a reasong.

Donald is the defending champion, and #1....it is an UPSET.

Majors are not important. If they were, Ben Curtis and Shaun Micheel would be better players than Colin Montgomerie and Lee Westwood.
Only fools cares about majors. Winning the money lists are what counts.

did I not just read an article that stated the US was making a come back in golf, look at what is left in the match play, 32 players, 20 of which are internationals, nice come back

I'm still picking Paul Lawrie to win(Lawrie,...not "Lowery" as the idiots on ESPN pronounces his name). He's won in the desert twice before, and he has great form for the last 5-6 months. Only problem could be his stamina.
