The Tom Watson-John Daly British Open pairing on Sunday will be the best of the day

Look, say what you want about wanting to see Adam Scott or Graeme McDowell or Tiger Woods or whoever. For my money, the best pairing on Sunday from Royal Lytham and St. Anne's is going to be the one that tees off at 2:30 in the morning, Eastern time: Tom Watson and John Daly.

Think about that for a second, and think if you can come up with two men farther apart on the golf spectrum than Daly and Watson. It's not just their demeanors or their sartorial style, Beige vs. Vomit-on-a-Frathouse-Couch. It's everything about them, the way they approach the game of golf and life itself.

Now, there may not be a person alive who dislikes Tom Watson, but Daly has more than his share of detractors. Thing is, the guy actually does have a respect for the game, and he'll get the chance to put that on display again Sunday morning (though it'll go unseen by most of the United States). They're both British Open champions, and that's saying something ... though I'm not quite sure what.

Hopefully ESPN will broadcast some of their play, or better yet, some of their conversation. And even more hopefully, Tom will talk JD into aging gracefully. I shudder to think what would happen if Daly starts influencing Tom to start using beer cans as tees.
