Tiger Woods could get close to $3 million for playing Abu Dhabi

Torrey Pines holds a special place in Tiger Woods' heart. Not only was it the site of his historic U.S. Open victory in 2008, the course has been a staple of his schedule since 1998 -- a familiar track that became his personal playground over the years, as Woods won six times in a 13-year span, including four consecutive victories from 2005-08.

Simply put, Torrey is Woods' second home. But despite his love for the California gem, he decided to pass on playing the event this year. What would make him pass on one of the top events on the PGA Tour? Try a nearly $3 million appearance fee he's going to get for showing up to play the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

With the European Tour's star-studded event in the desert going head-to-head with the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines, the Sheikhs pulled out the big guns to lure Woods to Abu Dhabi, reportedly giving him, according to the Golf Channel's Rex Hoggard, somewhere between $1.7 million and $2.7 million. That's some serious coin, folks.

While the appearance fee money is pretty much in line with what Woods has made in the past -- he scooped up $3 million for playing the Australian Masters, so it looks like Abu Dhabi actually got Woods at a slight discount -- you can't help but look at the figure and shake your head.

With a reported $5 million appearance fee pool for this year's event, Abu Dhabi spent 60 percent of its funds on one guy, which is borderline insane, in my opinion. But when you consider Woods is still the biggest draw on the planet, maybe the number doesn't seem that absurd after all.

As long as he pays his "fair share" in taxes, who really cares..... Then again who really cares anyway?

Tiger looks happy in that photo, maybe he has gotten it together.
      • gene 3 months ago
maybe so but i think the Shieks know what makes him happy... and provided him with what he likes. LOL

We expect Tiger to be within winning distance all the way and end results at least Top 3 to justify his appearance fee

I am willing to bet "Tiger pays more in taxes than " Willard" i realize he is in that 1% group too but.. He earns his with sweat like most of us do, and not with the hardship of others. I just hope he gets his game back.. With the young athletes like Rory coming up , it makes it exciting..

Here's a thought? Maybe build that Canadian pipelie so the Shieks aren't making so much money off us.
      • iPAD 3 months ago
The pipeline will not affect the price of oil, you brain dead twit.
      • Double U 3 months ago
My point was that less oil would come from the Middle East and not from these Shieks. Seattle, uh, they got you really brainwashed up their.
      • John 3 months ago
just for your info, there is already a Canadian pipeline. try looking it up.

No-one with any sense could justify being bothered by Woods taking cash from a bunch of money-grubbing Arabs.
      • TheBestEver! 3 months ago
Especially when the money comes from all the gas that we consume. Complaining about extremists and supporting them by our insatiable appetite for their cheap oil. Does not compute, does it? At least he is taking some of that money back!!!

The level of hate and vitriol posted on these Golf stories exceeds those of the Team sports which is surprising given that people playing this sport are known for some degree of dignity and respect.Because of Marital infidelity To suggest that in any part of the imagination that TW could commit an act of terrorism & lead to the killing of thousands points up the culture we have devolved into. WOW!

Hey Seabird: What has Woods sold out? The PGA? He made the #$%$ PGA the way it sits today. They should pay him a percentage of the TV contract every time he tees it up! Sell out? Hardly. Every player in the last 13 years owes him a percentage of their winnings if life was fair! Guess what? It's not fair, but he should be able to play when and where he wants because every time he does, someone else is making more money on his talent than he including the Arabs!

Whats the big deal? The Arabs have deep pockets. There allowed to enjoy golf too. Or is that too much for you to grasp?
    • Double U  •  Glendale, California  •  3 months ago
Do you bloggers even think for yourself or you just writing what Jimmie Roberts says? Did you know the PGA is not allowed to give appearance fees? That's right morons. Did you hear Tiger say that? Did you hear him say he was going to start playing different events? Did you know this is the first time he's played this one?
