Tiger Woods had to hit a golf shot on Thursday from the water, still saved par

It might be hard to see, but that figure you see there in the bush is Tiger Woods, No. 2 in the world but probably No. 1 in getting out of trouble. Tiger was having a rather bland opening round by his standards on Thursday at the Honda Classic, but was making a charge on the front nine (he teed off on No. 10) to get back to even par when his tee shot on No. 6 found the hazard.

Instead of taking a drop, Tiger went Bill Haas on PGA National, taking his shoes and socks off, rolling up his pants, ditching the sweater and adding rain pants to his ensemble. Woods would get deep into the hazard and punch his shot out back into the fairway on the par-4. What next? Tiger got it up and down, saving par and following that hole up with a birdie on No. 7 and an even par round of 70.

Here is Tiger's explanation, via the Golf Channel.

"I was 1 over at the time, and if that ball is not playable from where it's at, where I caught was pretty far back and I would have had to have dropped," he said after his round. "I couldn't even get an angle in the first cut and had to drop in the primary and had to lay up and didn't get that up‑and‑down – looking at a six, 3 over, (but) all of a sudden I flip it, make par there and birdie the next."

Basically that is golf parlance for "I needed to hit it out of there if I had any shot of posting a solid round of golf." He did, and while even-par isn't going to be leading after day one, it is a fine spot to be with 54 holes left to play.
