The American Ryder Cup team is locked and loaded for Medinah Country Club.
For the last couple of weeks, the golf world speculated who captain Davis Love III would select with his four captain's pick. On Tuesday morning at NASDAQ headquarters, Love ended the suspense by selecting Steve Stricker, Brandt Snedeker, Jim Furyk and Dustin Johnson to round out his 12-man squad.
After years of having at least one wild card captain's pick, Love decided to go with the chalk selection, picking the four names that had been mentioned the most in the days leading up to the announcement.
The only name left off the team that you could categorize as a snub was Hunter Mahan, who won twice early in the year before falling apart over the summer. He posted only one top-10 since his win at the Shell Houston Open back in March, so the decision to leave a guy who was struggling mightily with his game off the team made sense.
While picking chalk sometimes has a tendency to backfire, this time around Love made the right decision. Stricker and Furyk bring some much-needed experience to the squad, and the addition of a red-hot putter in Brandt Snedeker and Dustin Johnson's length should have the American squad primed to contend against an incredibly deep European team at the end of September.
