Steve Williams to caddie for Adam Scott this summer
The band is getting back together.
Adam Scott will have former full-time caddie Steve Williams on the bag for four events this summer, including three major championships. The Kiwi will loop for Scott starting with Scott's next event, the U.S. Open, followed by the Open Championship, WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and PGA Championship.
Williams will replace Mike Kerr, who Scott announced last week had been fired as the Aussie's full-time caddie.
Scott and Williams parted ways after last PGA Tour season when the two were unable to forge a relationship that satisfied Scott's need for a full-time caddie and Williams' desire to have more weeks free.
The two first worked together at the 2011 U.S. Open, when Scott called on Williams to be his caddie when Tiger Woods was unable to play due to injury. The relationship became permanent after Woods fired Williams ahead of Woods' Quicken Loans National near Philadelphia. That summer, Scott won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational with Williams on the bag. After the win at Firestone, the caddie gave what is perhaps the first-ever winner's bagman interview.
“Steve was adamant that he was not going to caddie in 2015, so he took some convincing, but I am very happy he’s agreed to help out,” Scott said in a release. “We’ve had great success together, so I’m looking forward to being on the links with Steve again.”
Scott has said in the past that he derived some confidence in his game from Williams' presence. He'll need it considering he's now 12th in the world and was No. 1 a year ago. Where Williams can help most, if at all, is giving Scott confidence with the putter. Scott made a short-lived change to a traditional putter from the long putter at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in March. He since switched back, but has failed to rekindle any sense of magic with the long wand.
