Showdown, Week 33: Carl Pettersson vs. David Toms

So in an attempt to inject a bit more life and interest into tournaments, and because we're all inveterate gamblers who are one bad card from being out on the streets, Jay Busbee and I are playing a golf version of a football suicide pool: We each pick one golfer per tournament and see how they do against each other, straight up. Victory over the other guy gets one point, victory in the tournament gets three points, and a tie lands you half a point. (Double for the majors.) We turn our attention to the Wyndham Championship.

Wall: I'll roll with "Mr. Leaf." Carl Pettersson won the 2008 Wyndham the first year the tournament returned to Sedgefield Country Club, and he finished T-4 last season. Plus, I think the golf gods throw him a bone after that ridiculous rules infraction at the PGA Championship cost him more than $500,000. My prediction? He makes it back and then some this week.

Busbee: David Toms: While the incentive might be to pick one of the guys on the bubble for the FedEx Cup, that's a hit-or-miss proposition. I'm going with Toms, who's pretty much dead-center (65), so much so that he's not even thinking FedEx. (He's not alone.) Toms has two top-20 finishes in the last two years at the Wyndham, including a second-place finish in 2010, so he'll be comfortable.

Last week: Tiger Woods was unhappy with his T-11 at the PGA Championship, but we know one guy who really enjoyed the finish: that would be one Jay Busbee. Thanks to another solid major week from Woods, Busbee picked up two points to increase his lead. Louis Oosthuizen gave Wall hope early on with an opening-round 70 ... and then came crashing down to earth with a 79 during the second round. He finished T-21.
