So in an attempt to inject a bit more life and interest into tournaments, and because we're all inveterate gamblers who are one bad card from being out on the streets, Jay Busbee and I are playing a golf version of a football suicide pool: We each pick one golfer per tournament and see how they do against each other, straight up. Victory over the other guy gets one point, victory in the tournament gets three points, and a tie lands you half a point. (Double for the majors.) And when we burn a golfer, he's done for the year. We turn our attention to the Greenbrier Classic.
Wall: Give me U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson. He finished T-9 last year at the Greenbrier and actually held a share of the lead after 36 holes, so he's had some recent success on the Old White TPC course. Plus, I still think he's riding an Olympic Club high. He'll come in refreshed after taking the week off following his win and a cross-country flight from California to play the Travelers Championship in Connecticut.
Busbee: Jim Furyk: Sure, he's a bit wobbly after those last three holes at Olympic, but the guy still ranks third on Tour in scoring average. (In a cruel twist, he ranks 5th in driving accuracy ... would that he could have put that into play at Olympic.) He's got plenty of competition this week; many of the best in the world are in the field. But this is the week that Furyk holds it together and brings home a win ... or at least a good enough finish to get me my points.
Last week: For the second straight week someone actually won a point! This has to be a new record. Jim Furyk managed to make the weekend and finish T-34 at AT&T National to secure one point for Wall. K.J. Choi, who missed the cut by a mile, failed to help Busbee keep his winning streak alive.
Current score: Busbee - 7.0, Wall - 6.0.
Already Used: Wall - Gary Woodland, K.J. Choi, Martin Laird, Nick Watney, Lee Westwood, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Steve Stricker, Zach Johnson, Luke Donald, Ryan Moore, Jim Furyk, Webb Simpson. Busbee - Nick Watney, Webb Simpson, Bill Haas, Ben Crane, Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott, Zach Johnson, Luke Donald, Robert Karlsson, Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, K.J. Choi, Jim Furyk.
