In the words of a family release on the golfer's website, Ballesteros' "neurological condition has suffered a severe deterioration." It's impossible and irresponsible to speculate on what that might mean, but this is difficult news for Seve's fans worldwide. Ballesteros, one of the most inspiring and enjoyable golfers in the game's history, has been suffering from brain cancer since 2008.
His public appearances have been less and less frequent as his condition has worsened; he spoke to Team Europe at the Ryder Cup, but was unable to make the journey to Augusta this year to be honored by Phil Mickelson during the Champions Dinner.
Ballesteros won five majors, including three British Opens and two Masters, and leads the European Tour with 50 career wins. Our thoughts are with him and his family.
