Sergio Garcia: If I weren't a golfer, I'd be a vet or play soccer
It's hard to imagine Sergio Garcia as much anything other than a professional golfer. The world's No. 2 has been in the broader golf consciousness since his endearing run at Tiger Woods in the 1999 PGA Championship.
However, even then, Garcia was no sure thing to become the kind of global star he is today. So it was interesting on Wednesday, then, to hear Garcia share what he would have done with his life had he sputtered out in golf.
"I would have loved to be involved with sports no matter what," he said at the WGC-HSBC Champions in China. "So either football player or maybe a tennis player. I've always liked animals, so maybe a vet or something like that. I would have to study a lot for that, though."
Garcia may as well be a vet through the end of the European Tour season. Though second in the tour's Race to Dubai money list, Garcia finds himself with the near-impossible task of catching Rory McIlroy for the season-long title.
He joked, "If I win all three tournaments -- and Rory doesn't play any -- then I have a chance."
