Phil Mickelson’s improbable, illogical, incredible win at Pebble Beach

Phil Tiger at Pebble Getty Images

The golf world was never supposed to be like this. There were certain things that made sense and that was that. Fred Couples had a smooth swing. Tiger Woods was the champion. Phil Mickelson was the lovable loser we all enjoyed rooting for, even if at times he came through in the clutch.

[Video: Mickelson, Woods and even Tony Romo highlight week's best shots]

But this? This?! No no no. We were told this wasn't going to happen. Phil Mickelson was paired on Sunday with Tiger at Pebble Beach, a place that still has a bruise from the last time Tiger slapped it. No matter what happened since, Pebble was Tiger's to feast on, and Phil was the guy that had won here before but always as the guy he was, nothing more.

Nope. This isn't the script. Phil isn't supposed to be sticking irons to three feet while paired with Tiger. He isn't the guy that makes clutch par putts from darn near Burlingame. And an iron off the 18th tee?! What happened to the man that hit driver off the deck with a chance to win?

Golf is a game that isn't supposed to be understandable, yet for so many years, Tiger Woods made it that way. He forced us to believe in another dichotomy . He brainwashed our logic. We knew Phil Mickelson. We knew Tiger Woods. Both incredible talents that couldn't be further from each other.

Much like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, Tiger and Phil are geniuses in their own regard. Phil, more like Gates, has relied on a career to make him a namesake. He had a way of doing things and never wavered from it. Tiger seems to come more from the Jobs mold, if you don't mind forgetting that Tiger's "blow ups" are more in the form of stares and history. Tiger, like Jobs, got out of the gate fast. He showed us a way to do things. He introduced us to something revolutionary and made it seem like it was the only way. Phil has always been there. From his PGA Tour win as a college kid to his 40th victory this afternoon, Mickelson understands who he is and what he does. He is a magician. He produces things in a game we never thought possible. He is reliable.

On Sunday, logic finally left the building. A man named Tiger fell to a man named Phil again at a golf course that has shown both the respect they deserve. Phil is a masterful man, but he is no Tiger. These days, it seems the reverse could as easily be said about Mickelson.

[Related: Mickelson, Woods play 'Freaky Friday' on Sunday at Pebble Beach]

The putts Tiger missed on Sunday are probably going to be overblown. He decided, it seemed, that taking the break out of the infamously bumpy Pebble Beach greens was the way to go, and it never worked out for him. He missed short putt and short putt, on the high lip, with too much speed. It was a recipe that just wasn't cooking. Knowing Tiger, he will move on from this the same way he always does. "I hit some good putts today that didn't go in," he probably said (I honestly didn't check his quotes). It's the Tiger way.

For Phil, things are surely changing. His post-round interview didn't lend much time on the present, but more on the future. "I hope it is one of many this season," he remarked quickly after his birdie putt dropped on the 72nd hole. He had posted a 64 in the final round of a big golf tournament while paired with the guy most never thought he'd be able to beat.

A few years back, Tiger said of a fellow competitor that was getting a little frisky with his words, "9 & 8." It was the golf equivalent of "scoreboard" in basketball. Tiger, I have bad news for you. If you let Phil get you again, he's going to be able to turn those words around at you.

The 2012 season is in full swing, folks. I hope you're ready for the fireworks.

Why is is that when Phil comes from behind to win, it's "improbable and illogical", but when Tiger comes from behind it's a great moment in golf? Phil is obviously the better golfer right now, so give the the credit he deserves.
      • golf nut 3 months ago
Why? For the same reason why if Tiger misses a short putt, he's having an off day or the greens or bumpy, but when Phil misses, it's a choke. Media imposed double standard. Watch the 2011 Masters and see how many short putts Tiger missed. If Phil did that, the media would have slammed him.

Phils win puts him at 40, which ranks 9th on the all-time list. Loser - Really?
Here is the order - Snead (82), Nicklaus (73), Woods (71), Hogan (64), Palmer (62),
Nelson (52), Casper (51), Hagen (45), Mickelson (40). Not bad company!

Writer should find a new profession. Who gives a flying $%#@ about Teeeegeer.

Phil built his career as the "lovable loser". yes he has 40 wins and what...3 majors? Which put him in good company, But lets be honest...If he is lucky he will finish about 55-65...AT BEST. Majors? His best bet to win is in the next two years, maybe three. Phil's "great" game is built on aiming for the pins and when it works..it works wonderful. But when it doesnt...he doesnt make cuts. So let his "lovable loser" facade continue. Tiger is coming back...enjoy it!

Tiger will never regain his earlier dominance. Much of it was based on everyone else's inability to deal with his supposed iron will. Now that the exterior is cracked a bit, the rest of that top tier are not as impressed, or intimidated by him. It is no small thing to create such a huge reputation and dominance...but doing it a second time will be virtually impossible.

Phil on the other hand, is consistent, and he is incredibly secure in his skin. His life is good, his family is great, he has weathered some of the toughest storms, and come thru with flying colors. I'm sure he will play until he can play no longer, but it is not something he needs to define him any more. Tiger? He is nothing without his golfing career. Even his money cannot make up the difference.

@ Shane Bacon....Please tell me Yahoo doesn't actually pay you to write this garbage. Phil is among the greatest golfers of all time, and you disrespect him so?
      • A Yahoo! User 3 months ago
All you need to know about bacon is that he is a reporter.

Rather quiet from the Phil-Bashers. Must be busy eating CROW.

My fervent hope is that Phil gets the guy's address and goes over and pops him in the mouth, but the loser is too much of a coward to open the door......
    • Douglas C  •  3 months ago
Again Bacon demonstrates his utter stupidity, lack of talent, and tunnel vision. Phil has owned eldrick for almost two and a half years. Time after time he has soundly trounced Bacon's fantasy guy, why would one expect different results. Only a complete idiot or a biased untalented blogger would expect different results. If Bacon wants to stay in golf he should, perhaps, become a parking attendant at tournaments.

There was nothing improbable or illogical about Phil's win.
The improbable and illogical thing is the blind faith of Tiger's fans among the
      sportswriters in this country.
      Facts are facts.
Tiger Woods has not won a tournament on the P.G.A tour in almost two and a half years!
      The past is the past.
Please report on what is happening now and not what used to be.
When and if Tiger returns to winning form report on it.
Until then report on the great golf that is being played by Phil, Rory, Keegan, Luke etc!

It is simply amazing that after two and a half years we have to always put up with this. Fans are getting sick of it. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't make an exemption for him to play on the senior tour at 40.
      • Joyce 3 months ago
He'll show up with a 'hurt' wrist, or some other fanasy 'injury'... what a freakin LIAR.
      • TJ 3 months ago
You dont really care how Phil did...you simply hate Tiger. If Tiger 1)starts smiling more 2) signs autographs from the fans after every practice 3) has nothing but praise for every other golfer during his post round press sessions, 4) and continues to lose...you will assume that Tiger has "ulterior" motives. You will whine and complain when ANYONE writes about Tiger. Its very sad when people who have never met him or even been in the same zip code as Tiger "hate" him and want him to fail. If he "retired" from golf youd complain that he isnt giving enough money to his kids and his ex wife.

You must not have seen that Tiger is the most disliked professional athlete along with Mike Vick. It has become more than a little annoying to hear some of you writers putting Tiger on a pedestal. Do you think he is a good role model for your boy(s) if you have any?? I don't want my sons to be like Tiger Woods.
    • Arky  •  3 months ago
The writer is an idiot. Phil won the Master two years ago and finished second at The (British) Open. This sports writer is a loveable loser and a Tiger fanbois. Idiots "journalists." Tiger sucked and is a slime.
    • Paul  •  Perth, Australia  •  3 months ago
Phil beat him head to head the last 5 times they played in the final round. This is not an upset, the better golfer has been winning these head to heads for years. Go Phil.
    • Kelly Chase  •  Los Angeles, California  •  3 months ago
Real golf fans like myself who actually play the game are sick of hearing about some guy who hasn't won in 2 1/2 years. I should hear as much Eldick chatter as any other has been.

Yahoo has by far, BY FAR, the worst golf articles on the 'net. Is Shane Bacon a high schooler earning credit? Shane, you get a C minus here sweetheart. Mickelson is a 20 year vet with 40 wins. He's beat Woods numerous times including several times in a row. What sport do you usually comment on? Soccer?

This article should have been about Phil and his wife Amy, but heaven forbid an article on golf goes by without mentioning woods. Ditch that loser and concentrate on Phil next time!

That was the best final round I have ever seen Mickelson put out there.

      Phil 64, Tiger 75.
      Says it all.
Or, maybe not. Amy Mickelson may be a mom, but today she's America's sweetheart.
Happy Valentine's Day to Phil & Amy!

Shane Bacon's improbable, illogical, incredibly ridiculous opinion. Phil IS NOT A LOSER!
    • ucemeicu  •  Houston, Texas  •  3 months ago
This so-called writer knows nothing about Phil and obviously wanted Tiger to win. Only the winners picture should be shown!
    • bulletproof  •  Leeds, Alabama  •  3 months ago
even writers as well as fanboys for flyface, live in the past...for if they try the present...they must retreat back to the past....

Shane Bacon.....still working on eldricks nob again I see..even after a choke loss..
No matter what they say about Phils age, weight, whatever disease he has..he just proved to
AP/Yahoo/Bacon,Busbee, and that idiot Chase he can still put together 4 days of great golf.
