You don't have to love Phil Mickelson as a person, but boy, do you have to love how he approaches the game of golf. Playing it safe is not a weapon in his arsenal. Sometimes this all-out approach pays off huge, as on Augusta Sunday, when he pulled off the most amazing shot of his career by putting a shot from the pine trees onto the green. And sometimes, everything blows up in his face, as at the Memorial on Sunday, when he tried to go big and ended up flaming out.
The story: Phil was on the 15th, a few shots out of the lead but within striking distance if he finished strong. He was looking eagle; it didn't work out that way. He put his tee shot into the creek, opted to drop rather than go back to the tee, and then ... well, just watch:
The Memorial needs to put a plaque down on that cart path right now. Fifty bucks says whoever's playing the course this morning has already tried to imitate that shot. (Another fifty says they splintered their driver on the attempt.)
Anyway, obviously things didn't work out for Phil. All things considered, though, I'm sure he's OK looking the fool in the Memorial since he came up huge at the Masters.
