If you were to take a poll of every golfer on the planet and ask them to pick one course to play for the rest of their life, chances are pretty good you'd get an "Augusta National" response from a large majority.
Augusta National is a special place, no doubt about it. So it shouldn't come a surprise that when Golf World Magazine asked 81 tour players to anonymously rank every tour stop on the schedule, Augusta National came out on top as the course players enjoy the most.
While Augusta National wasn't a shocker at No. 1, a number of courses raised some eyebrows. Harbour Town Golf Links (home of the RBC Heritage) was actually ranked as the second favorite course on tour, which is a shock considering a lot of big names skip it after the Masters, and tour officials contemplated dropping the event after it spent a year searching for a new title sponsor.
Riviera Country Club (Northern Trust Open), Pebble Beach (AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am) and Colonial Country Club (Crowne Plaza Invitational) rounded out the top five on the list. What do those courses have in common? Most of them are historic tracks that, with the exception of August National, haven't changed a whole lot in recent years.
They're classic layouts where shotmaking is put at a premium. So maybe the new-age, bomb-and-gouge courses aren't so great after all!
Of course, on a list where there are winners, there also have to be some losers, too. Torrey Pines (Farmers Insurance Open), TPC Four Seasons Resort at Las Colinas (HP Byron Nelson Championship), TPC San Antonio (Valero Texas Open), Ritz Carlton GC - Dove Mountain (WGC Accenture Match Play), and Liberty National GC (The Barclays) finished in the bottom five.
While every course on tour isn't going to please every player in the field, it's never a good thing when a course hosting a WGC event and another hosting a FedEx Cup event round out a list.
