Mark O’Meara nearly tied the lead at the British Open with this putt

On Thursday at the British Open, Mark O'Meara turned back the clock. The 56-year-old won this event back in 1998, but has really struggled in the majors as the years have gone on, carding just one top-10 in all the majors since '98.

That looks like it could change this week at Muirfield if he continues to play like he did on Thursday, posting an opening 4-under 67 that looked like it would be 66 as his birdie putt on the 18th hole was tracking.

O'Meara raised his putter, the ball caught the lip and it looked like a birdie, but the cruel lip-out left him with just a par, which I'm sure is fine with the two-time major winner.

That result reminded us of what happened to Phil Mickelson earlier this year at the Waste Management Open on a Thursday, as he was trying to join the 59 Club.

Both were cruel, but both were still parts of a couple of great rounds that could have been one better.
