Ivor Robson, voice of the British Open, retiring after 41 years

Ivor Robson, the man with that familiar, lively, high-pitched voice that introduces the players at the British Open, will be manning his position on the first tee for the final time this week at St. Andrews.

Robson, who has wielded the Open first-tee mic since 1975 at Carnoustie, will retire from the post after the Claret Jug is awarded this week at St. Andrews.

“I feel you can’t go on forever and if you’re going to step off there’s no better place to do it than here,” Robson said Wednesday before the four-hole Champions Challenge, according to Golf Channel. “It’s time to go.”

In 40 previous Opens, Robson, who handles similar duties for the European Tour, has never missed a tee time. Not one. He gets through the day with well-timed bathroom breaks and plenty of water.

The Brit will finish out the season with the European Tour, through its Race to Dubai, before passing the mic to someone else.
