Hunter Mahan makes a statement with his Match Play victory

A professional golf career can sometimes be defined by one shot (just ask Jean Van de Velde), and for the last year-plus, Hunter Mahan's entire career has been summed by just that: a single shot.

We've all seen the shot before of Mahan standing over his chip on the 17th hole of the 2010 Ryder Cup (heck, NBC replayed it countless times this week) and promptly stubbing it about 25 feet in front of him to lose the hole and the match.

It was a gut-wrenching shot, and for the longest time, it was the one that defined Mahan's career. Forget that he was a three-time tour winner and member of multiple Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams, all that seemed to matter was that one shot.

But that all changed on Sunday, as Mahan picked up a statement victory at the Accenture Match Play over Rory McIlroy that proved he's on his way to turning things around at the age of 29.

[ Golf Digest: Hunter Mahan's 10 rules for finishing a great round ]

Mahan was on his game this week, taking out some big names -- including Steve Sticker, Y.E. Yang, Zach Johnson and Matt Kuchar -- en route to the finale. The names were impressive, sure, but it was actually the way Mahan went about almost every match that made you stand up and take notice.

Simply puy, the dude in the flat bill Ping hat was on point all week long. He picked up 16 birdies during a 30-hole stretch during the tournament, and carded nine more in 13 holes during a 6 and 5 demolition of Matt Kuchar in the quarterfinals.

But it wasn't just the birdies that made the week impressive. Mahan's short game -- something he's worked on tirelessly over the last year -- was about as perfect as we've seen it in ... well, maybe ever. He was getting up-and-down from all over the course and rolling in the clutch putts that never seemed to drop last year.

If you want a prime example of how much practice can pay off, just go back and watch the short game clinic he put on for much of the week. It was a huge reason why he made it to the final and took out one of the top players in the world.

Now comes the hard part of Mahan: Trying to capitalize on the biggest win of his career, and keep the positive vibes going. Even though he hasn't been able to do it in the past, you have to like his chances this time around. Not only does his swing look completely sound, but his confidence in every aspect of his game is also at an all-time high.

With the Ryder Cup chip now a distant memory and a statement win under his belt at the Accenture, you can see why 2012 has all the makings of a special year for Mahan.

I don't understand why Mahan is always blamed for that Ryder Cup loss. It makes no sense. If you're not a golf fan or you're an idiot, then yeah you blame Mahan. McDowell was a tough opponent, and that match and the Ryder Cup was basically already lost at the point when Mahan made his chip. McDowell had a 5 foot putt which he wasn't going to miss, so Mahan had to chip it in to extend the match. Just getting up and down would have given him a half, which would have ended the match and lost the cup. The guy to blame was Bubba Watson. He lost 4&3 to Jimenez!! THAT'S the point we should have had, which would have won the cup.

I don't se how you can blame Watson? You might as well blame Kuchar, he lost to Poulter 5&4 or Stricker/Woods who lost 6&5 to Donald/Westwood. Not one person is responsible for that loss.

Jack was great without all the technology and money the guys today have.
      • eng e 2 months ago
His opponents used the same technology, no?
      • W 2 months ago
The point is Jack dominated and no one dominates today because technology makes up for flaws.

Jack was obviously an elite player who would compete and win majors in todays game, but the fields are deeper now and the players are more athletic nowadays.

Nice play by Hunter especially after that shank shot in his match against Westwood.

Fourteen measly comments. Had the opponent been Tiger, the headline would have said, "Tiger loses" and there would be 1000 comments.

Has Hunter won 14 majors? Is he the first billionaire athlete? Nope, only 1 tiger.
      • W 2 months ago
Only one Jack. Tiger will never be greater than Jack. Jack also did it for the game, not the money, which makes him even more untouchable. Jack aslo had more class, which puts him well out of reach of Eldrick.

Jack did it for the the game????? Hahahahahahahaha...good one.
W, you're as dumb as Jr.

      Congrats Hunter!

Congrats to Hunter, played well the whole week. One could say that Rory shot his load in the semis to beat Westwood, and that Rory just didn't have it to recover for a final. However, when you consider the players Mahan beat to get to this final, it's a very impressive run.

Guy CAN go low, it's the one high round every week that has hurt him. I hope he goes on a roll.

He just goes along quietly and playing great golf. No temper tantrums, club tossing,
or profanity ala Teegray!! Also great to see teegray bow out early!!!

Yet you read and comment incessantly on every one. If you stick your hand in a flame and it burns you, do you keep sticking your hand in the flame? Duh!

Mahan played great and certainly deserved to win. However as for his "16 birdies in 30 holes" and his "9 birdies in 13" holes against Kuchar, the article is misleading or written by someone that does not know anything about match play golf. Mahan made plenty of birdies, but he was CREDITED with making a birdie when he was on the green in regulation, and an opponent was conceding the hole to him. The opponent could have been in the water or desert with no chance of making par and Mahan could be on the green 20 feet from the hole in regulation, the opponent concedes the hole Mahan is credited with making a birdie even though he never finished the hole. Mahan won and played well, but he did not make 9 birdies in 13 holes against Kuchar or 16 in 30 holes.

IMO, bigger than any statement he made on the golf course is that with that mug he managed to land a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader for a wife. Now that's a win.

jonatiny wall's "articles" are as good as Hunter's chip in the Ryder Cup.

I enjoyed every minute of it. Afterwards, during his interview, Mahan was very gracious and acknowledged how McIlroy was such a great player. In the past, I listened to McIlroy run his mouth about Tiger Woods.....All I can say is, little boy, take your toys and go home....you got your butt kicked.

If he got his but kicked then Tiger got his #$%$ whooped.

I get so tired of all the negative tiger woods comments that people post. Golf would not be as popular today if not for a man named tiger woods, who brought in viewers whom would have never bothered watching such a boring sport. Give the man a break, we all could use one every now and then. If he was the best and white, we would of been over his transgressions by now. Show a little compassion.

Well Golf Nuts I followed Hunter down here while he was playing in the Presidents Cup and he was one of the sure things day in and day out. A true fighter and he didn't have a problem saying hello when I said good morning to him and Kooch as they were in play. Both are professionals and are really good at what they do, the good part is they know who appreciates them!!! I am a bit perplexed at the writers not being able to do better in their research to find where Hunter as excelled in as a single player as well as attributes he has provide teammate supporting the USA... Hunter it is game on now go out and get someone... Aim high and put it into flight! Get the endorsements as I can see the color of "Hunter Green" looking really good on shirts, shoes, bags, towels and watchbands.... Did I get them all? Oh! Gun sights on Titlest Pro-V1s...
