Sizing up the TV coverage from the Chevron World Challenge ... and away we go.
Tiger Woods was the big winner at the Chevron World Challenge. But you want to know who else came out a big winner? Mashed potatoes, that's who. No, you didn't read that wrong; next to Woods' birdie putt on 18, the "mashed potatoes moment" probably ranked as the second-most talked-about tournament story.
Let's set the scene: After rolling in a birdie on the par-3 17th, Woods strolled to the tee on 18, grabbed a 3-iron from the bag and unleashed a rocket that seemed to go forever and land in the center of the fairway.
It was a big deal, sure, but it wasn't that memorable of a moment ... until some guy in the gallery screamed "mashed potatoes" right after the ball came flying off the face of Woods' club.
The yell left NBC's Roger Maltbie puzzled: "What was that!?! Did somebody just yell mashed potatoes?"
Of all the things someone could say right after a shot, I'm guessing "mashed potatoes" would probably be that down the list of "phrases to scream at a golf tournament." Or at least that's what most assumed.
One look at YouTube tells us "mashed potatoes" isn't new to the golf scene. If anything, it could be on the verge of going viral at golf tournaments in the near future.
A gallery member yelled the exact same phrase after a Tiger shot at the 2010 PGA Championship; then yelled it again at the 2010 Ryder Cup; and don't forget about another moment involving Tiger at the 2011 Australian Open.
For some reason, the phrase has been living underground for the last couple of years. However, after Sunday, the shout could gain some traction after showing up at Woods' first win in two years.
You thought "get in the hole" was a tired phrase ... just wait until 100 guys start yelling "mashed potatoes" at the next major tournament. It looks like we have another reason to look forward to the 2012 season.
