GolfTube: CBS slow plays viewers during final round

Sizing up the TV coverage from the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am ... and away we go.

It was billed as a pairing for the ages, a Tiger and Phil showdown that was supposed to draw viewers to their couches on Sunday afternoon, as two of the greatest golfers on the planet went head-to-head in the penultimate group on one of the most picturesque backdrops in golf.

Honestly, I don't think a TV writer could have scripted a better final round story. It was beyond perfect, and CBS capitalized on the moment by posting its highest rated Pebble Beach finish in 15 years.

That was the good news for CBS. The not so good news was the network once again failed to produce during a key moment in the tournament on Sunday afternoon. Blame it on the the suits and antiquated rules, but there was once again a 30-plus minute window during the final round when the tournament wasn't on television.

We've talked about this issue in the past, but CBS's decision to run college basketball coverage right up to the start of the golf tournament is a problem that needs to be rectified -- especially when you have a marquee pairing on the course.

Following the Golf Channel's early round coverage from Pebble, the network went back to the studio at 2:30 p.m. ET before CBS came on the air at 3:00 p.m. The only problem was CBS never goes live with golf coverage on time.

In years past, there have been one or two college basketball games that ended on time. And like clockwork, Sunday afternoon's Michigan-Illinois game went over its allotted time slot. There were still two minutes left in the contest when 3:00 p.m. rolled around, which meant viewers were stuck wondering what the heck was going on for almost 50 minutes.

Sure, the Golf Channel gave a couple of live look-ins and some updates, but for almost an hour, viewers were stuck getting updates from the studio and Twitter (the social media site went ballistic when CBS failed to go live to Pebble on time).

The big question is why didn't CBS allow the Golf Channel to show coverage right up until the college basketball game was over? The two networks may not work hand-and-hand (NBC and Golf Channel have the "synergy"), but you would have at least hoped CBS would have given the Golf Channel the green light to proceed with coverage until they went live.

But that never happened. Instead, viewers missed Tiger Woods' back-to-back bogeys on the 7th and 8th holes -- which turned out to be a critical turning point in the tournament.

I understand CBS has a deal with the NCAA and college basketball is a cash cow for the network, but someone needs to come up with a backup plan for these situations. You would think the Golf Channel and CBS would at least try to work together to make this possible. But as we saw on Sunday, that's most likely a golf pipe dream.

They should just let the Golf Channel continue with uninterupted coverage until CBS is ready to go live. I agree, we missed the critical holes. By the time CBS came on live, the tournament was almost over for all practical purposes. Once Phil drained that 80 foot bomb after Tiger holed out from the bunker on No. 12 it was over.

CBS has sucked like this before. And, it doesn't matter that Tiger was screwing up, but we should have been able to see Phil surging ahead. Also, do you know what "Faldo" means in Spanish? Well, he is one!

CBS can't screw-up the masters because Jim Nance has an appointment in the Butler Cabin. When will CBS replace the dreadful Yanni music and put a muzzle in Jim's mouth. CBS has no alternative channels to switch the BB game or an agreement with NBC/G channel. Besides by the time CBS gets to golf Jim has a half hour of verbage that MUST be read before live coverage. The talking heads are KILLING sports coverage.

Love it! CBS - Can't broadcast sports! So true. You think they would have learned years ago when they lost the NFL rights what Fox learned right away...games DO NOT end right at 6. Fox learned and put throwaway half hour shows on then so when the football games ran long the whole night's programming did not get screwed up. But what did CBS do when it got the rights back? You guessed it, they kept right on putting 60 Minutes on right at 6 and wrecking the night's schedule once again. These people at CBS never learn anything!

Right, so CBS thinks that a Michigan-Illinois basketball game in the middle of Feb is going to get better ratings than this golf match-up.

It is absolutely ridiculous! This isn't the first time it happens all the time. And these aren't close games they are double digit games. What I don't understand is why the team with the lead is fouling in the final 2 minutes? This isn't a Golf Channel issue, they would have no problem covering the golf until the game finished and CBS was ready to take over. I as an avid golf supporter would like to see this take care of. Thank goodness college BBall will be over by the Masters....can you imagine missing an hour of a major??

When CBS finally came on, they spent half the time in the booth and not on the course. I know this will come as a big suprise, but not everyone give a #$%$ about Tiger. There is a whole field of players and we are not seeing them.

I'm not surprised that's nothing new.

doubt I'll watch this event again, as you said, besides being too late to the critical holes in the match, too much time schmoozing in booth...way too much George Lopez and Bill Murray - both of their acts wearing thin, old, tired and monotonous...

Makes you wonder what part of the Masters CBS will also screw up.

The solution is very simple. Make the refs call ALL of those "INTENTIONAL" fouls in the last few minutes of the game. The penalty for an intentional foul is: The player who is fouled gets to go to the free throw line for 2 shots AND the team that was fouled gets to inbound the ball. That would eliminate players commiting a foul just to get the ball back to their team. It would shorten the game by at least 10 minutes.

That's one of the top reasons I don't watch basketball.

THERE IS ONE CERTAIN FACT IN LIFE THAT CBS, ESPN, GOLF CHANNEL AND SEVERAL OTHERS REFUSE TO ACCEPT. woods IS JUST ANOTHER GOLFER.

Just start the basketball games a half hour earlier; then you have a cushion if they go over their allotted 2 hours. Maybe even go to golf early ?!?!?!? Wouldn't that be nice !

This nonsense has been going on for years at CBS. They only allow 120 minutes for an entire college BB broadcast. The last 5 minutes of the game takes nearly 45 minutes in most cases. They know this, but they keep on doing it. College BB is so overexposed. That last 5 minutes takes 45 minutes even in a 20 point blowout. It's shoot, foul, call timeout, shoot free throws, call time out, foul, shoot free throws.........

excellent article. CNS' Jen Sabatelle was saying how since the tourney got high ratings, there is no problem here. Yeah, like #$%$ everyone off is a smart thing. Nice work CBS. CBS does a good job on the masters and that's it. They really blew it Sunday.
    • Thomas  •  3 months ago
It #$%$ me off how that college game had less than 2 minutes left, and it took 20 minutes! Stupid refs kept putting players on the free thrown line in a blowout with under 1 minute to play. Drove me nuts!

Just let CBS know every commercial during the last "nail-biting" two minutes that we are forced to watch, we refuse to buy those products and let the companies know it! Let's see a solution FAST!!!

f'ing insane, we see on G channel Tiger and Phil hit onto the par 5 and then they start analyzing the very tournatment we're dying to watch. Then they blank out as Phils nails an eagle and we are left wondering #$%$ just happened. Poorly done

They do it on purpose. If not then they are the dumbest idiots in the world. They got sponsors to pony up for ads with viewers during garbage time. I stopped watching those jerkoffs with their programming and my life got a lot better.

I agree with "Driver;" I would like to see intentional fouls called intentional. I don't understand why the NCAA, which is supposed to stand for honor and other qualities befitting an "amateur student-athlete," allows teams to benefit from intentionally fouling opponents.
      • Brian 3 months ago
It's becuase they are getting the players ready for the NBA they do the same thing at the end of games. Also the NCAA doesn't stand for that stuff anymore the only thing they stand for is the ALL MIGHTY DOLLAR.

Get over it Jonathan Wall. From the start of coverage on CBS it sure didn't look like viewers missed much of anything. That is unless you count the replays of back to back boogies for your pump buddy El Dicko Woods.
