Arizona golf coach has topped 6,000 head-to-head wins

Bobby Knight has 902 Division I basketball wins. Joe Paterno, 401 D-1 football wins. Add 'em together, multiply 'em by four, and you still wouldn't come close to Rick LaRose's record.

Obviously, we're talking different games here. But Rick LaRose has amassed a stunning 6,003-2,422-70 head-to-head record as the golf coach of the Arizona Wildcats' golf team. Pretty impressive for a guy initially hired to coach the water polo team.

"Obviously, we’ve had some great teams and some great players," LaRose told Golfweek. "A coach is only as good as his athletes, and I’ve been fortunate to have coached some great people. Secondly, you have to be at this a long time. Still, no matter how you look at it, 6,000 is a very big number."

LaRose won both men's and women's NCAA titles, in 1992 and 1996 respectively, and he's the only coach in NCAA history with both men's and women's golf titles.

As Golfweek notes, LaRose surely isn't the only coach with 6,000 wins, but he's the only one whose university sports information department has run all the numbers. Do we hear 7,000?
