Shuffle up and Deal: Down on the corner

View gallery

Below you'll find my corner rankings from today-on, the cheat sheet I'd use if I were walking into a new draft tomorrow. What's happened to this point matters as an audition, but this isn't a ranking of what's happened – it's meant to be a ranking of what the players are worth starting fresh. Don't get hung up too much on the individual prices in a vacuum; what matters is how the players relate to each other.

Your intelligent disagreement is welcome in the comments, as always, but come with a strong argument. Random ranting wastes everyone's time – defend your disagree, and offer how you'd tweak the list.

$39 Albert Pujols(notes)
$37 Evan Longoria(notes)
$35 Alex Rodriguez(notes)
$34 Miguel Cabrera(notes)
$33 Ryan Howard(notes)
$33 Mark Teixeira(notes)
$32 Justin Morneau(notes)
$31 Prince Fielder(notes)
$30 Joey Votto(notes)
$29 David Wright(notes)

Comments: Albert's mini-slump isn't even a story in my mind, and the backdrop of the Yankees lineup should keep A-Rod afloat. … It's obviously pretty damn great to be Evan Longoria these days, as the Big League Stew chaps are here to discuss. We're all about the numbers in this space, but those have been great, too. … Morneau is one of those players I never seem to have ranked highly enough, to my detriment. He had some physical issues on the eve of the season, but he quickly put everyone at ease with a big first quarter.

$27 Kevin Youkilis(notes)
$27 Ryan Zimmerman(notes)
$25 Mark Reynolds(notes)
$25 Adrian Gonzalez(notes)
$24 Billy Butler(notes)
$21 Kendry Morales(notes)
$20 Pablo Sandoval(notes)
$20 Jorge Cantu(notes)
$20 Paul Konerko(notes)
$20 Jose Bautista(notes)
$20 Adrian Beltre(notes)
$20 Chase Headley(notes)
$19 Michael Young(notes)
$19 Casey McGehee(notes)
$19 James Loney(notes)
$19 Scott Rolen(notes)

Comments: Bautista is one of the hardest calls on the board and there was a good discussion of his pros and cons in Closing Time earlier this morning. Keep in mind his power surge dates back to September; he's got 25 jacks over his last 78 games. Take a bow, Dwayne Murphy. … We'd like to see more power from Headley, but don't look past what those steals are worth. … Beltre's off to a fast start in the average department and the power is starting to come around. He'll enjoy his first summer in Fenway Park. … Was the speed spike a one-year thing, Mark Reynolds? … Michael Young doesn't have any spiky numbers, but the Arlington undertow offers a nice floor.

$18 Ian Stewart(notes)
$18 Placido Polanco(notes)
$18 Michael Cuddyer(notes)
$18 Aramis Ramirez(notes)
$18 Ty Wigginton(notes)
$17 Adam Dunn(notes)
$17 Martin Prado(notes)
$17 Nick Swisher(notes)
$17 Garrett Jones(notes)
$17 Adam LaRoche(notes)
$16 Lance Berkman(notes)
$15 Derrek Lee(notes)
$15 Carlos Pena(notes)
$15 David Ortiz(notes)
$15 David Freese(notes)
$14 Chone Figgins(notes)
$14 Troy Glaus(notes)

Comments: Polanco's lineup slot and dual-position grab push him up an extra buck or two. … Ortiz has rallied nicely after the dreadful start, but I still don't completely trust him on the road or against left-handed pitching. … Would a trade out of Houston perk up Berkman's bat? I'd give him an extra dollar or two on spec, should a swap go down. … I wish I had magical answers on the Cubs corners, I don't. Where would you slot them? I can't get ridiculous with a low price, they've both got a long history of being productive, but physical concerns also have to be considered. … Freese has quickly endeared himself to St. Louis fans, collecting a slew of two-out RBIs and clutch hits. Maybe that stuff isn't a skill and isn't worth discussing too much, but if nothing else it's helping Freese relax and it's given him some extra job security.

$13 Alberto Callaspo(notes)
$13 Juan Uribe(notes)
$12 Casey Blake(notes)
$12 Edwin Encarnacion(notes)
$12 Eric Hinske(notes)
$11 Gaby Sanchez(notes)
$11 Chipper Jones(notes)
$10 Miguel Tejada(notes)
$10 Luke Scott(notes)
$10 Aubrey Huff(notes)
$10 Jose Lopez(notes)
$10 Ike Davis(notes)
$10 Justin Smoak(notes)
$9 Jeff Keppinger(notes)
$8 Jhonny Peralta(notes)
$8 Kevin Kouzmanoff(notes)

Comments: Maybe it's time to go back two years on Encarnacion and read all the nice things we were saying about him. Or maybe the Metric system and Toronto's fast start is messing with my numbers. … Tejada hasn't been a running factor for several years, he's no longer capable of hitting 20 homers, and now there's average points leaking out of the balloon. … I'm a sucker for position-eligibility grabbers like Hinske, and there are plenty of line drives left in his bat. Here's hoping Bobby Cox is willing to get him regular time for the next four months.

$5 Todd Helton(notes)
$5 Russell Branyan(notes)
$5 Daric Barton(notes)
$5 Gordon Beckham(notes)
$4 Adam Kennedy(notes)
$4 Conor Jackson(notes)
$4 Jerry Hairston Jr.(notes)
$4 Adam Rosales(notes)
$4 Hank Blalock(notes)
$3 Alex Gordon(notes)

Comments: I can't wait until Gordon leaves Kansas City and gets to the second act of his career. I'm not giving up on him in the long term. … Will the thin air of Colorado keep Helton out of the Hall of Fame? There's an argument to be made on both sides. I don't have a vote, but when in doubt, I think they should keep them out. There's no shame in being a very good player but just short of Cooperstown. … Our Beckham bash party was last week; click here if you have a few words for the struggling sophomore. … Last year Jackson had Valley Fever (this isn't some sort of Nicolas Cage joke); what's his 2010 excuse?
