Injury Wrap: Game-day call for Jamaal Charles

Just when we were ready to dial up a buzzy No. 2 running back in Kansas City, the news flow gets all pesky on us. To the injury clipboard, starting with the ground crew.

• Jamaal Charles (ankle) had a partial practice Friday and has a shot to play at Miami on Sunday, according to AP reporter Herbie Teope. It's a pesky situation for fake footballers, given the late start on game day (4:25 pm ET). Knile Davis is an intriguing plug-and-play if Charles can't go. And it's somewhat of a mess if they both dress on Sunday, given that we know Charles isn't 100 percent. Sunday Update: Looks unlikly for Charles to go.

• The Texans have been running Arian Foster into the ground all year (a whopping 55 carries), so it's no great shock he's dealing with a sore hamstring and listed as questionable. He missed some practice time this week. It seems like Foster will go on Sunday, but check back on game day just to be sure. Alfred Blue is the preferred handcuff, running ahead of Jonathan Grimes.

Sunday Update: Foster is out; Blue is a solid flex play in his place.

• Lamar Miller missed some time due to an ankle issue last week, but he's not even on the Week 3 injury report. Lock and load, at home against Kansas City.

• Ben Tate (knee) won't play before Week 5. Terrance West starts against Baltimore.

• Maurice Jones-Drew (hand) did some work this week and is listed as questionable for Week 3. Just what we don't want, more complications in the Oakland backfield. The Raiders have an early start at Foxboro. Darren McFadden (12-37 rushing, 2-31 receiving) was ordinary last week, though he did score one touchdown.

• Bernard Pierce (thigh) did some Friday reps and is listed as questionable for the game at Cleveland. Justin Forsett is around as a change-of-pace guy, and we're still waiting to see Lorenzo Taliaferro to get a chance.

• DeAngelo Williams (hamstring) did some Friday work and has a chance to play, and muddle the backfield, on Sunday night. I hope your depth is good enough to ignore this backfield entirely.

• With Jonathan Dwyer (exempt list) out of the picture, the Cardinals plan to use Jalen Parmele as their goal-line back. Parmele, 28, saw a few carries with the Jaguars two years back, averaging 3.6 yards a pop. He was a sixth-round pick in his 2008 draft class; there's probably not much here.

Wide Receiver/Tight End

• Dez Bryant (shoulder) had two partial days of practice and is listed as questionable, though we suspect he'll start at St. Louis. It's an early kickoff, so no worries here.

• Vernon Davis (ankle) missed the full week of practice and although he's listed as questionable, you have to guess he won't play at Arizona. It's also one of the later kickoffs, keep that in mind. With Vance McDonald (knee) also dinged up, Derek Carrier might get the call.

• Jordan Cameron (shoulder) did some work during the week and seems likely to go Sunday against the Ravens, though he's officially tagged as questionable.

• A.J. Green (toe) had a full practice Friday and was upgraded to probable on the injury report. Sounds like he's in good shape for Sunday's home game against Tennessee.

• Brandon Marshall (ankle) hasn't had any practice yet this week, but we all remember what he did at San Francisco last week. Alshon Jeffery (hamstring) is also dinged up, though he played last week and had a partial workout on Friday. The Bears play the Jets, in New Jersey, on Monday night.

• Keenan Allen (groin) had two days of limited practice and is listed as questionable, though context clues point to him playing at Buffalo. It's an early start on Sunday, so you'll have a window to double-check before go time.

• Wes Welker is off the suspension list and not on the injury report, so it looks like he'll be in the mix at Seattle. I'd like to see one prove-it week before I trust him in any lineups.

• Rob Gronkowski (knee) and Julian Edelman (back) are listed as probable. Do a quick lap on Sunday, but it looks like they're fine.

•

The Jets have been whistling an optimistic Eric Decker tune all week, but he's yet to practice. Saturday is the key day for him, given that the Jets host Chicago on Monday. I'm prepared to rest all of my Decker shares in Week 3 unless he has a significant upgrade in New York's final full practice. Jeremy Kerley is a different type of player than Decker, but maybe he'll get some extra looks if Decker can't go.

• Sammy Watkins (ribs) had a strong week and is listed as probable, so do what you were going to do.

• Jordan Reed (hamstring) is out for Week 3, which means Niles Paul is good to go as Washington's starter. Paul and QB Kirk Cousins showed instant rapport in the romp over Jacksonville last week.

• Charles Clay (knee) missed some work this week and is listed as questionable. The Dolphins play in the second wave Sunday, adding some risk.

• Hakeem Nicks (illness) missed the last two days of work and is questionable for Sunday's tilt at Jacksonville. He has a modest 6-32-1 line through two games.

• Rod Streater (hip) did some work Friday and is listed as questionable, not that your receiver search puts you this deep.

• Tavon Austin (knee) looks unlikely to play, though he's listed as questionable. We'll sign off on Brian Quick, of course, but no one else in this wide receiver group looks interesting.

• Jerricho Cotchery (hamstring) missed Friday's work and is no guarantee to play Sunday night against his old mates, the Steelers.

• Marqise Lee (hamstring) won't play against Indianapolis, but things look good for Allen Hurns (ankle/probable) and Cecil Shorts (hamstring/probable). The Jags are sticking with QB Chad Henne for now, but he might be on a short leash after a dreadful game last week at Washington.

Quarterback

• Carson Palmer (shoulder) isn't ready to return, so it's the Drew Stanton show once again for Arizona. That's a hit for the offense in general, and especially for Michael Floyd, who does his best work on intermediate and deep routes.

• Tony Romo (back) doesn't look 100 percent right, but the Cowboys merely list him as probable.

• Shaun Hill (thigh) took some reps this week, but you get the idea Austin Davis will pick up another start. The Rams haven't made a public declaration yet.

• Josh McCown (thumb) is expected to miss multiple games, which gives the Bucs a convenient excuse to try Mike Glennon for a while. Maybe Glennon can get Vincent Jackson going, something McCown has been unable to do. Tampa plays Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Baltimore over the next three weeks, then rolls into the Week 7 bye.
