Today, the 53-win Mariners dealt Jarrod Washburn(notes) to the 53-win Tigers. Washburn has had a tremendous season for Seattle (8-6, 2.64 ERA, 1.07 WHIP) and a crazy-good July (4-1, 1.44, 0.87). He's been effective both home and away and he's hurting lefties and righties. Splits here. The left-hander is a free agent at the end of the year, so he's picked a nice time to have his finest season.

The Mariners have been especially good at converting batted balls into outs -- no small thing for a defense-dependent flyball pitcher like Washburn (5.3 K/9) -- but the Tigers offer more run support. This deal doesn't significantly move the needle on Washburn's fantasy value. If anything, I'm less interested in him today. Washburn has out-performed his FIP (3.75) this season and he's leaving a situation that suited him awfully well.

Still, he's a useful add for the AL Central-leading Tigers, and the Yankees can't be too pleased. They were linked to Washburn in recent days. The M's added two left-handed pitchers who lack immediate fantasy relevance: Luke French(notes) and Mauricio Robles. French is cost-controlled and he could slide right into Seattle's rotation. He's a fair pickup, though he's not a high-end starter. The 20-year-old Robles has 111 Ks in 91.1 innings at Single-A this year, so there's clearly hope for him.

Detroit fans, if you feel like braggin', comments are the place to do it...
