Fantasy Basketball: Week 4 Player Rankings

Justin Phan
Roto Arcade

We’re approaching an interesting intersection of the season right now as the fast starters are quickly cooling down and those slow out of the gates are just beginning to find their stride. I’ll tend to give players the benefit of the doubt if there aren’t any major red flags with their peripheral numbers, as you will see below.

Based on 9-category z-scores to date, these values from Basketball Monster equate the average ease values for each team’s group of opponents this week:

Easiest Schedules: Miami (+0.59), Orlando (+0.50), Portland (+0.27), Boston (+0.23), Minnesota (+0.23)
Hardest Schedules: Memphis (-0.48), Dallas (-0.41), Sacramento (-0.36), Cleveland (-0.30), Phoenix (-0.27)

A stellar 30:6 assist-to-turnover ratio and triple-double this past week have got me doin’ that John Wall AND the dougie. Wall was the third highest-rated player this past week, but his status for next week is a bit uncertain with the sprained left foot … Expect a big week from Steph and Monta with David Lee(notes) sidelined. Lee may come back toward the tail end of next week but I wouldn’t exactly count on it … Billups has me pretty concerned with his early-season decline. Minutes are down, assists are down, and shot attempts are down. His usage rate is fairly stable though, which is a rare plus amongst many negatives … T.J. Ford(notes) is doing his best to limit Collison’s upside, playing 24 minutes to Collison’s 23 on Saturday. The possibility of a platoon doesn’t scare me long-term, but is something to keep a close eye in the interim … Bledsoe is a lot more bark than bite. He’s in a great situation as the starter with Baron starting to pop up on milk cartons, but his fantasy impact hasn’t exactly been anything to write home about. He came in at 128 in per-game value this past week, with his only categorical positives being assists (6.3) and free-throw percentage (100%; 2 FTA) … Mo Williams (groin) may miss another game or two this week, opening the door for Ramon Sessions, who could be a sneaky good short-term option.

50. Carlos Delfino(notes) – LAL, @PHI, OKC (3)

Eric Gordon is still dealing with a shoulder injury, but is playing valiantly through it with the help of a brace. He’s a must-start as long as he’s in the lineup … Dorell Wright has come down to earth a bit after making 22 of his first 41 three-point attempts, hitting just 7 of his last 21. No need to really panic and start selling him cheap though; all shooters go through hot and cold streaks … With the pack so tightly bunched after Turkoglu at 20, a four-game schedule takes major precedence over anything else … The status of Roy (knee) and Delfino (neck, concussion) are still up in the air at this point so they get bumped for now. Obviously Roy owners have a lot more to be concerned about than those who are invested in Delfino. Batum and Rudy Fernandez both get bumped up significantly if he was to miss any time … Mickael Pietrus(notes), Jamal Crawford(notes) (2 games), James Harden(notes) and Austin Daye(notes) barely miss the cut.

After scoring 16+ points in each of his first five contests, Richard Jefferson is starting to cool off, averaging 12.7 points in his past three games. Sell high while you still can – his shooting percentages are still way out of whack (58% FG, 47% career; 50% 3PT, 35% career) … Really like Weems as a short-term plug-and-play while Kleiza is dealing with his Achilles injury … Butler has a four-game slate for next week but I’m treating it more as three. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him miss some more time with the ongoing issue with back spasms … I’m glad I didn’t make any rash roster decisions with Jamison as the wait is starting to pay off. He’s averaged 16 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 1.7 treys on 20-of-38 (52.6%) shooting. Same applies to John Salmons.

50. David Lee – DET, NYK, @LAL (3)

We’re seeing some regression to the mean here – Brand and Odom get moved down a couple spots while some slow starters (Randolph, Al Jefferson, Amar’e) get bumped up … Bosh is finally remembering that he’s 6’10 and plays a position that usually entails grabbing rebounds. He’s hauled in 22 rebounds in the past three games (7.3 per game) after averaging 5.4 in the previous seven … Beasley is scoring at an exceptional rate, but hasn’t done a ton in other areas and is averaging three turnovers a game … Warrick and Bass have earned more minutes with their improved play early on and should be stable options moving forward.

Hibbert and Ibaka are playing out of their minds right now – both rank in the top-15 in per-game value, both largely buoyed by their block averages … I’m on board with the Gooden resurgence and he’s responded with three strong efforts this week in which he has averaged 13 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 1.7 steals … Miller has leapfrogged Jordan Hill(notes) as coach Adelman’s center of choice and will be a nice short term play as Yao Ming(notes) deals with yet another injury.
