Rangers left-hander Derek Holland(notes) has been tremendous in his six starts at Triple-A this season, posting a 4-1 record with a 0.93 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 37 Ks in 38.2 innings. The 23-year-old will make his 2010 major league debut on Wednesday against Oakland. Matt Harrison(notes) heads to the DL with biceps tendinitis.

Here's the short-term Holland plan, via Foul Territory:

He will come to Arlington on Sunday and throw a bullpen session so that pitching coach Mike Maddux can get his eyes on Holland. Washington did not say that Holland would be in the majors to stay.

"Lets let him get here, get out there and see what happens," Washington said.

Even though Holland will pitch in a tough environment — hitter's park, DH league — he's a person of interest in most formats. His rookie season in Texas was obviously messy (6.12 ERA), but he managed to deliver a five-game streak of useful starts in early-August, and his strikeout potential was clear. In 260.1 career minor league innings, Holland has posted a 9.7 K/9 and a 3.97 K/BB.

On Sunday, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram offered a few details on Holland's tweaked arsenal:

Holland credits his success to being able to place his four-seam fastball on the inside and outside of the plate, as well as developing his secondary pitches. He primarily throws a slider now, instead of a curveball, and has regained a feel for his changeup, which is considered a plus-pitch for him.

The way the schedule lines up, Holland should face the A's, Angels and Cubs over the next two weeks. He'll double-dip in Week 7. Add/monitor as needed.
