Breaking: DeAngelo Williams might get traded, might not

For various reasons, it's no simple thing for NFL teams to make blockbuster deals at the trade deadline — particularly when those deals involve players who are under contract for multiple seasons and millions of dollars. Thus, it would be no surprise if DeAngelo Williams remained a member of the Panthers beyond Thursday's deadline. If he's dealt, a big cap hit follows.

But according to PFT's Darin Gantt, a reporter who knows a few things about Carolina, the team is prepared to sustain the cap hit. Apparently, more than one franchise has expressed interest in DeAngelo. Details:

While no particular deal is imminent, multiple league sources said there's a viable chance Williams is dealt before tomorrow's 4 p.m. deadline. Several teams have been in touch with the Panthers, and the interest is serious.

Just in case one of these interested teams is, say, the Packers (or the Steelers, or some other fantasy juggernaut), I've preemptively added Williams in a couple of leagues. If DeAngelo isn't dealt this week — which remains the most likely scenario — then he remains a handcuff, clearly behind Jonathan Stewart in Carolina's backfield hierarchy. If he moves to a more productive offense, however, then he has every-week starter potential.

Of course it's entirely possible that the Panthers are simply trying to create some Williams buzz, inventing a market where none exists. Perhaps there are not "several teams" interested in absorbing his contract, or even one team. He's not the only running back who may be on the block, after all.

Still, he's a reasonable one-day-only fantasy pickup. If Williams doesn't relocate to a new team, you can toss him back on the discard pile. No great harm in speculating.
