Bracket Big Board: Luck not responsible for Notre Dame’s amazing turnaround

Brey's brilliant coaching has opponents seeing green. (US Presswire)

The Bracket Big Board takes into consideration past returns, current performance and expected future gains in determining who should be included among the field of 68 (31 automatic and 37 at-large bids). Essentially, the Bracket Big Board is a cheat sheet designed for amateur bracketologists if they were filling out a Tourney Pick 'Em '12 entry today. The Triple-B, the second-most accurate bracket predictor among macro-sites over the past four years, is updated every Monday until the dance card is unveiled March 11.

When teams are faced with extreme adversity one of two outcomes usually occur: 1) Assume the fetal position and fold or 2) Grin, bear and fight through it with every ounce you got.

Notre Dame, fitting given the school's pugilistic nickname, chose the latter course.

Entering the season the Fighting Irish were projected to flirt with the at-large fringe. Big East Player of the Year Ben Hansbrough along with key contributors Carleton Scott and Tyron Nash, a group that comprised 51.9-percent of the club's offensive last year, moved on to greener pastures. Even with All-conference forward Tim Abromaitis and senior guard Scott Martin returning, the Irish were largely young, unproven and destined to rough it with perennial dungeon dwellers DePaul, South Florida and Rutgers.

Barely into the season, it got worse, much worse.

During a late November practice, Abromaitis, the team's offensive cog and general leader, planted wrong on a cut, shredded his right anterior cruciate ligament and ended his season. Presumably, the Golden Dome's was toast too. Luck certainly wasn't on its side. Dejected by the massive blow, Mike Brey was very pessimistic about what the future would hold. From the South Bend Tribune:

Getting back to the NCAA tournament for an eighth time in 12 seasons in South Bend was not much of a reality. Brey wondered if his team, then 7-5, had the fight and might to be good enough just to qualify for postseason.

"From the Gonzaga-Indiana time, looking up at the rest of the league, you've got no hope," Brey admitted late Saturday afternoon. "The little step was, 'Can we get a little bit better to get to the NIT?'

Over the next several weeks, the Irish, understandably shaken from the crippling loss, struggled to cope. They were pummeled by Gonzaga on the road and dropped pivotal games against Maryland and Indiana on neutral floors. Standing at 7-5 in mid-December, ND's best case scenario was to simply remain competitive through another murderous Big East slate.

    Boy, did it ever.

After a 3-3 start in league play, the Irish have thrown one devastating jab after another, socking the likes of Syracuse, Connecticut, Marquette and West Virginia. Only two games out of first, Mike Brey is now talking tourney, an absurd delusion just weeks ago. From the Chicago Tribune:

"We have one heck of a strong resume," Irish coach Mike Brey said. "It's exciting to think about, that that's possible for this team, with where we were. Our guys are very focused on showing up on Selection Sunday. And God bless 'em, they should be."

What's more wacky? Notre Dame is in line to sew up a two-round bye in the Big East tournament. Even wackier, looking at its rather friendly remaining schedule, a regular season championship is not out of the realm of possibility. A road trip to Georgetown Feb. 27 is daunting, but it has winnable matchups against Rutgers, Villanova, St. John's, Providence and West Virginia, a squad it defeated by four in Morgantown Feb. 8. If the Irish take care of business, Brey not only deserves National Coach of the Year honors, he deserves to be crowned Coach of the Millennium.

The Irish's sketchy defense under Brey has led to several early exitsBrey wasn't short on talented players, but with little experience outside Martin and junior Jack Cooley, expectations were appropriately tempered. Still, the savvy coach, as usual, has maximized the potential of his young players. Sophomore guards Eric Atkins and Jerian Grant have combined for 25.6 points and 8.3 assists per game. Four-starred frosh Pat Connaughton has also elevated his game in pivotal moments, evidenced in his sensational 23-11-3 performance against Marquette. And the bench has also chipped in. Alex Dragicevich and Tom Knight have logged quality minutes.

However, the primary reason for the Irish's remarkable turnaround is defense, an uncharacteristic catalyst for a Brey-coached team.

According to KenPom.com, Notre Dame has not ranked inside the top-40 in defensive efficiency once since 2003. It's highest mark during that span: No. 42 when it went 25-8 in '07-'08. Suffice it to say, contesting shots has rarely been an Irish strong suit. But without Abromaitis, Connaughton and company were forced to up the ante with their backs to the basket.

    It's definitely worked.

Over their current six-game win streak the Irish have held opponents to just 0.93 points per possession, well below the 1.01 national average. That inflexibility combined with its cautiousness with the basketball (ND ranks ninth nationally in offensive turnover percentage) has Notre Dame on the upswing. If it can continue to exude grit on defense down the homestretch, the Mock Turtleneck could clinch a Sweet 16 berth for the first time since 2003.

Through supreme toughness, sheer will and excellent defense, the Big East's most surprising story has turned an unlucky setback into success.

The Misery Tiggers will be derailed by KU in AFH. Go Jayhawks!

N.C. State is going to have to beat one of those ranked ACC teams to get in, and the game against Miami is a big one, they need to get that one since both of them are really riding the bubble...and how can Northwestern be in along with 8 big east teams? West Virginia may be pretty good, but they are going to have to put together a string of wins to get in, and Connecticut can't lose another game, just in my opinion.

I agree completely. Right now with 8 in from both the big ten and big east there are multiple teams from each conference that are under .500 in conference play that don't deserve to be in, imo. Hopefully neither league gets 8 but both leagues have more bubble teams so we shall see. Would much rather see a smaller conference team like a fourth from the mwc, 2nd from colonial, etc than the nortwestern, Illinois and seton halls of the world make it.

How can Marquette be in front of Baylor? More Top 50 wins, higher SOS and RPI.

Brey, as he has done before, has once again exceeded expectations during the regular season with a limited talent pool and depth rotation, and deserves kudos for this. He has also often underachieved during the post-season tourneys and NCAAs, with one Sweet 16 in '03 and some early 1st and 2nd round exits with teams that could have reasonably been expected to do better...like last year's...what I like about this year's version of regular season overachievement is the use of patience, milking the shot clock with good shot selection, crunch-time good free throw shooting, and tough defense...all qualities which typically help in the NCAAs...this team needs to keep realizing that a 3 point lead against DePaul is just as hard fought and precious and important to defend as a 3 point lead against Syracuse or Marquette...they need to keep their heads, humility and focus...they're not going to blow anyone out...but they can be good enough to compete and win against anyone...

And Brey does not cheat. Does have to suspend players for unspecified reasons (weed/SEC). Proud of coach .

I like Valparasio out of the Horizon, instead of Cleveland St.....and it seems like teams from that small conference do well come March Madness

I hate Duke but they may well sneak that 4th Number 1 seed out of there after the win over the Heels. I think UNC and Michigan St are the most dangerous 2 seeds for two very different reasons: MSU for coaching, The Heels for talent. But UK is going to cut 'em down! I hope.

With UNC and Duke, one has to be a 1 and the other a 2 so they can both play their opening games at Greensboro in their annual easy draws into the Sweet 16.

Hate on hater...part of the reward for being a top program is playing your 1st 2 games close to home.

yeah here we go again and this time it is in basketball. The pac 12 teams are in trouble again. There is no time for non conferance games in Jan or Feb. So again this year the teams can only move down and not up the line. Half the clubs will have about .500 records so even if you could win them all the rest of the way the schools are not gonna move up. The teams moving up belong to conferences where 1/3 of the teams will not win 5 conferance games. Here we go again SCREWED. You would think somebody doing the Brackets would see the truth. A lose in December to DUKE is not the same as losing to California in overtime in late February. Somebody back east wake the hell up please and see the truth.

I'm a West coaster, but you're lying to yourself if you think the Pac-12 deserves more than 3 bids this year (and even 3 is pushing it.) If I had to take 2, I'd take Cal and UW though. UW has AZ coming to Hec-Ed this weekend, and if the season sweep of AZ comes true, they're in.
      • William 3 months ago
Can't really say the Pac-12 deserves two bids, let alone three. The winner of the Pac-12 tourney would be the only bid, unless the winner is not the regular-season winner, which is a safe bet. Cal is my pick for the bid, with UW on a small bubble.
      • g_rusher 3 months ago
Agreed with these two. 3 is already too many. I live in Oregon and love the pack 12 but this year that conference stinks.
    • g_rusher  •  3 months ago
Mountain west looks much better. I said 4, 5 and 8 for those three last week but I can't argue with 3, 4 and 8. Still hope Wyoming or csu make it a fourth but both would need another great win. Don't think all 3 bottom schools of either the big east or big ten will get in or should get in but we shall see. Thank goodness ark, bama and Minn fell out. All three r not big dance worthy imo. I question whether 3 pac-12 make it as well with as bad as that conference has been. I know the committee usually favors the big conferences but I hope this year is different. Bring on march.

Oregon has a better record, better RPI than Arizona and Oregon beat Arizona at Arizona and you have Arizona in and Oregon on the bubble?
      • EddyM 3 months ago
So what? Arizona beat Cal at Cal, but the Golden Bears still deserve a better seed than Arizona. One game does not make a season.

Arizona and Oregon have almost identical RPIs and have the SAME record in conference. Out of conference records cannot be directly compared because the competition is different. Arizona played the toughest OOC schedule in the Pac, and OU did not. All of Arizona's OOC loses came against top 25 teams, and all those games were close down to the final two minutes.

Arizona has no bad loses or blow out loses, and Oregon does. That's the difference.

Mizzery Strength of Schedule #65. They were more than lucky to beat Kansas. Way Overrated. Duke, UNC, KU, Ohio St all would blow them out on a neutral court.
      • Ryan 3 months ago
Scott, you are really dumb. Do you even watch the games. Missouri provides matchup problems for any team in America. Offensively they are eerily similar to the Villanova team that went to the final four a few years back and the Illinois team that went to the finals. When you have great guards that shoot the 3 consistently well, handle the ball, and knock down free throws, you usually have a chance. I think Mizzou is about as good of a bet to make the final four as anybody. Particularly if they get to play the regionals in St. Louis. And no, I am not a Mizzou fan. I am an Illinois fan. But I recognize a good team when I see one. FYI, Kansas is an extremely good team as well. Whether they were "lucky to beat Kansas" or not, it is still a good win. And I don't see how making more plays at the end of the game means they were lucky. The game is 40 minutes for a reason. Stupid people like you infuriate me.
      • William 3 months ago
Mizzou would crush Ohio State, but I'm not too sure about the others. Mizzou is not overrated, though they are one of the smallest teams in the Big 12. Winning in a big league with small guys proves your not overrated, so watch out for the Tigers come March.
