Instant Analysis

The Netherlands stunned defending champions Spain, winning the rematch of the 2010 final 5-1. Even though Spain suffered a 1-0 loss to the Swiss at the start of the last World Cup, a loss this crushing simply wasn't supposed to happen. Expectations were low for the Dutch following a miserable Euro 2012 and a refresh of their squad with domestic league talent to support their remaining international stars from years past. Spain, meanwhile, suddenly looked like a shell of their once dominant selves after suffering their worst loss since 1950.

Man of the Match

Robin van Persie took the official award, but he and Arjen Robben had two goals each and both led the onslaught. They really should share it.

Buzzy Moment

Robin van Persie's first goal to begin the Netherlands' assault after Spain took a 1-0 lead will be remembered as one of the goals of the tournament. (See it here.)

What's Next

The Dutch are now sitting pretty atop the group with a massive goal difference advantage, while Spain will sit in a dark room until their next match against Chile, who are probably now feeling very inspired.
