Espanyol came up with an 86th minute equalizer to snatch a point in the Barcelona derby on Sunday. Damaging their local Goliath's title chances wasn't enough for Espanyol fans, though. They also had a geographical point to make.
"Qatar is not Catalonia," their banner read, in English, referring to Barcelona's big money shirt sponsor, The Qatar Foundation. A boldly obvious message from fans in a region where the fight for independence from Spain and the importance of local strength is still very much alive.Clearly, Espanyol fans do not want foreign money influencing their region's sporting landscape.
So which local company does Espanyol proudly wear as their shirt sponsor? Cancun tourism, which is located in the Mexico region of Catalonia -- otherwise known as not in Catalonia at all.
It's nice to see fans so committed to their principles. I just hope it's not too awkward when Qatari billionaires inevitably buy their club and make it so a draw against Barca is a disappointing result.
