It's been an interesting year for the league's players who do actually put their foot to the ball, and not in a particularly good way. From those who took umbrage at at Cris Collinsworth's comments in the latest edition of Madden to those who left their kicking form behind when they switched cities to those who got hurt and forced linebackers and slotbacks to take their place, this hasn't been the best season for the CFL's punters and kickers as a whole.

That doesn't mean teams have just sat tight and watched the situation degenerate, though. On the contrary, we've seen a lot of moves in attempts to procure more reliable punting and kicking performances, with the latest being the Argonauts' trade of defensive lineman Étienne Légaré and future considerations for Edmonton K/P Noel Prefontaine. Game of the week: Winnipeg 47, B.C. 35

The notable theme of the week was the revenge of the East Divison teams, who recovered from an 0-4 performance last week in these same matchups to go 4-0 against the West this week. This one looked pretty dull in the early going. The Bombers' curious decision to start the untested Alex Brink at quarterback worked out about as well as expected, and only early offensive struggles from the Lions and solid ground production from Fred Reid gave the Bombers a 4-0 lead at the end of

Today's Calgary - Montreal clash certainly didn't live up to its potential, finishing in a 46-19 drubbing of the Stampeders. Oddly enough, that was almost a mirror image of the 46-21 thumping they gave the Alouettes at home last week. It's a shame that two of the CFL's best teams weren't able to play at a high level at the same time in consecutive weeks. Still, despite the general drudgery of the game, there were two transcendent moments: Montreal slotback Ben Cahoon making first his 1,006th reception to tie Terry Vaughn's CFL record, and then hauling in his 1,007th reception to become the CFL's all-time leading receiver.

Cahoon caught the record-setting pass in the second half after the game was long out of reach. It came on a short crossing route like many he'd run before, but he showed great ability to haul it in and then pick up nearly enough yardage for a first down. Yards after the catch are a crucially important element of receiving, and they're something Cahoon has excelled at
