Dana White says Brock Lesnar’s run was a positive for MMA

Brock Lesnar retires at UFC 141 (Getty Images)With its two biggest pay-per-view draws (Brock Lesnar and Georges St-Pierre) disappearing in the last month, Dana White could be in a sour mood. But he's not, especially over the sudden retirement of Lesnar last week at UFC 141.

"The way I look at the Brock Lesnar thing is we were lucky to have him around for as long as we did. Look at what he did. It was fun to have him in the UFC while we did. He made the heavyweight division, some exciting fights," White said on "The MMA Insiders" on ESPN1100/98.9 FM in Las Vegas (10:09 mark).

White often tells the story of laughing at Lesnar when he first asked to fight in the UFC. He eventually went on to win the UFC heavyweight title and defend it successfully against Shane Carwin.

"I give him all the credit in the world in what he was able to accomplish, inside the Octagon, in this sport and as a draw for the UFC," White said.

The UFC boss is confident he has plenty of options to fill the void left by Lesnar's retirement and the ACL injury to GSP.

"I think we have a lot of guys. It's not like boxing where everything depends on one guy or two guys. The great thing about us is we got 10 or 15 guys," White said.

Deep down inside Dana is crying like a child because he knows he wanted Lesnar for a few more paychecks.

There are many competitive fighters in the UFC with many competitive fights, but that doesn't translate into pay per view buys...The UFC probably averages 50% less buys per pay per view when Broc or GSP weren't headlining.

Do you think it is wise to run headlines with "positive" and Brock" in them?

Love it how the keyboard warriors are out with a vengeance. Comparing Brock to Kimbo Slice... really?Yes they may have promoted Brock the same way Elite XC did with Kimbo. But the point is Brock IS a legitimate athlete. It's not like he waltzed in with a few street fights to his credit. He did actually have credentials which alot of MMA rookies start out with... WRESTLING!Yes Brock's stand up was terrible, yes they give him the title shot after 1 victory against a stellar opponent in Heath Herring. Yes he outweighed the champ (at the time) Couture by around 60 pounds, but this is a business which is trying to expand its fan base. People might not agree with the techniques that are used, but these same people would moan if the MMA fell through the trap doors due to lack of funds. You can't argue Lesnar didn't have #$%$ I mean, sure, he didn't like getting hit, nor did he react well to being hit but barring dos Santos, he has taken on UFC's Heavyweight elite. Like it or not from UFC 91 on wards Lesnar has faced the top guys in the division at that time.People moan about Couture being old and all that #$%$ but i bet these same people were thinking that Gabriel Gonzaga was gonna murder Couture ( who was coming off the highlight reel KO of Cro-Cop). I thought Gonzaga would of killed Couture but he lost, very convincingly! It's not like Couture was handed the belt back by default.. he won it or should i say defended...I'm not blind to see that Lesnar was too green to be called a "champ". Personally I think he is too old to "evolve" as a fighter. What you saw was as much as you would get. His retirement should have come as no surprise really. There wouldn't be any high profile & big name fights left for him and he can't have Dos Santos (present champion). Anymore fights which included Lesnar would be bad business in Lesnar's behalf because obviously people knew his weakness (keep it on the feet and you'll be fine) and the opponent of Lesnar would gain exposure through Lesnar's name alone. Through this whole statement I have put in I have come to the conclusion that, Lesnar i quote - Is not a fighter, he's a business man. He promotes his product. His product is his name.

The people who compare Lesnar and Kimbo have ZERO knowledge of MMA, period.

Dana just lost his only connection to any mainstream or crossover appeal with the retirement of Lesnar. He was unproven in MMA and was given way more in purse monies than any current, long standing UFC fighters. Dana is a circus promoter. The two highest UFC shows included who?? Lesnar and none other than Kimbo Slice. Other than the freak show factor, this sport is niche and with hacks like Cofeild pumping it, it is bound for glory.. Now that is funny.

Maybe Dana can talk the Rock into trying MMA. I guarantee you the Rock on any PPV card in his debut would pull three times the numbers that the 'Muhammad Ali of MMA" Sonnen would. That speaks volumes about this supposed sport. There is a very small and loyal fan base, other than that, the general pop. only gets interested when it becomes a circus sideshow.

Niche sport??? I think you are thinking of boxing...you know the sport where they have to comp tickets to sell out 4000 seat arenas for world title fights featuring Top 10 ranked fighters. No one cares about boxing, they can't even make the one fight people actually want to see let alone have any interesting characters or talent.

Paul, you won't win any arguments when you are comparing the niche sport of MMA to another niche sport. They are both niche sports for different reasons, but MMA is hurting if the don't have the big draws. Dana may say that there are lots of guys, but we know that there are only three, and two of them are gone.

Boxing a niche sport? And this is based upon its ability to generate revenue, its inclusion in the Olympics, its world wide fan base?????? No, I hardly think so. Skateboarding is a niche sport. MMA is a niche sport. But Olympic track and field events and boxing are not "niche." Total comedy. Most MMA fans are genuinely lacking in mental aptitude.

block lesnar's retirement was overdue anyways. it was exciting watching him get beaten around though.

I wish I could be as confident as Dana about having lots of guys to fill Lesnar's and GSP's shoes, but I don't. MMA will only really grow if people can connect with the fighters, so the fighters need to have personalities. The MMA talent pool doesn't have much in the way of personality, and so fewer people will watch.
Lesnar's run in UFC was positive and negative. It brought more people to the sport. However, it also showed how little talent there is in MMA. A couple decades from now hopefully MMA has developed enough so that someone can't walk in and become champion with very little training.

What's he going to say... the WWE guy was a fat turd and we set fights up for him just to bring those fans over to the MMA stuff... it would have been the truth, but he's not going to say it!!

The two highest viewed UFC shows ever included who?? Lesnar and none other than Kimbo Slice. Get over it Steve. MMA is a circus and the more circus you make it, the more buys you get. No one gives a #$%$ about Rockhold or Jardine.. Half the bouncers in Vegas could kick their a$4es and the 'maistrea' knows it. Tough sell Steve. offing hack.

Brock never did anything, he was just a cash cow and had a title fight handed to him!
    • OGNutcracker  •  4 months ago
Dana can always bring back Kimbo Slice. He got TUF its highest rating ever and pulls in the fans who normally wouldn't watch MMA. Not sure what that says about the sport, but it is fact...

Brock was a joke! That big and fast you couldn't learn to throw a punch. He should have stayed in the WWE. Thank you Brock for retiring you sissy!!! We can see you now.
