Boxing fans were nearly dancing in the streets on July 18, when Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer and his counterpart at Mayweather Promotions, Leonard Ellerbe, jointly announced during a conference call that Danny Garcia would fight Lucas Matthysse on Sept. 14 at the MGM Grand Garden on the undercard of the Showtime pay-per-view headlined by Floyd Mayweather against Canelo Alvarez.

From a pure action standpoint, it might have been the best fight that could be made in boxing at the time.

It was also an important step for the growth of the sport. Boxing promoters have often been hesitant to put expensive bouts such as Garcia-Matthysse on the undercard, because research has shown that most customers decide to buy a pay-per-view based on their level of interest in the main event.

However, it's a great move because it will give the newcomers and the casual fans a taste of what boxing at its best can be. It should be seen as an investment.

Matthysse has become somewhat of a cult figure in the sport because of his freakish punching power. Garcia is a quality fighter, as well, but he's been overshadowed frequently by his talkative father/trainer, Angel Garcia.

In the video below, I discuss the fight and dare to pick a winner in a match that has a chance to steal the show.
