Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury teases retirement

Tyson Fury is at the pinnacle of his boxing career after dethroning Wladimir Klitschko last November to become the WBA, IBF and WBO world heavyweight champion. You would think that being on top of the world would light a fire under the Brit as he prepares for a rematch with Klitschko later this year.

But this is the eccentric and unpredictable Tyson Fury we are talking about.

Fury recently appeared on BBC Radio 5 and revealed that he’s “struggling to get motivated” for the rematch. He even went so far as to suggest that he is considering hanging up his gloves.

"I could walk away,” Fury said. “I could just sail into the sunset unbeaten with all the belts and live a normal life."

Fury handed Klitschko his first loss since 2004 and derailed a streak of 19 straight title defenses. His victory appeared to be the dawning of a new era in the heavyweight division, but it seems that Fury may not be interested in leading the sport into a new frontier.

“I believe I'll be frozen in 2015 for the next 40 years, or however long I live for,” Fury said. “Nothing's going to outdo that achievement."

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone considering that Fury has a penchant for relatively outlandish things coming out of his mouth. But he appeared to be at least somewhat sincere, as he mentioned wanting to spend more time with his family. He says that he’s not concerned with cementing a legacy or making more money.

"All that I would be boxing for is money and I always thought to myself I never want to let sport become about money," he said while explaining that he has already accomplished his dream and has yet to even step into the boxing gym for training.

"There is life after boxing and I don't know what I'm going to do at the moment. I haven't even cemented I am going to fight in a rematch."
