Austin Trout: 'I got woken up and the beast came out'
Former junior middleweight champ Austin Trout had two big scares Friday night in his ESPN main event against Daniel Dawson before winning a unanimous decision. Post-fight, Trout gave Dawson credit for his strength but blamed the knock-downs on his own over-anxiousness.
"They were two, quick flash knock-downs, but he was strong. But, at the same time, I just didn't see them coming," he told a media scrum after the fight (video below).
"He had to wake me up and I got woken up and the beast came out."
Trout said the one adjustment ended up making all the difference, after the knock-downs. "[I] stopped being too anxious," he explained.
"I was trying to get after him too much and I got caught on the way in, so that's something that we're going to watch on tape and work on and get better at for the next one."
Now that Trout is back in the win-column, he's eager to avoid any more long gaps in competition. Despite being dropped twice, the fighter insists he feels fine and will be ready to fight again soon.
"I'm not hurt in any way. I'm not cut, I'm not swollen. I still feel good despite the two knock downs so I'm trying to get back there as soon as possible," he said.
"I'm not taking no lay-offs. Lay-offs aren't good for me. The busier I am, the better I am and it's obvious with that nine-month lay-off. And, the last fight was another nine-month lay-off. You keep me busy, you'll get to see the best of Austin Trout."
Trout was also asked to give an obligatory prediction on how he thinks the Sep. 13 rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana will go. The 28 year-old believes that Mayweather will have figured out the aggressive Argentine the second time around.
"I think it's going to be a more lop-sided fight, this time, Mayweather's way. He's too smart of a fighter," Trout predicted.
"There's nothing Maidana is going to do to change up his style. He's going to do the same thing. I think Mayweather already learned him, and he's going to figure him out. Look at the last rounds - Mayweather did what he wanted to."
