    • Andre Ward draws 1.3 million viewers to HBO for his TKO of Chad Dawson

Andre Ward attracted 1.3 million viewers to HBO for his win over Chad Dawson (AP)Super middleweight Andre Ward had a big night on Saturday in more ways than one.

Not only did he retain his WBA and WBC titles with a 10th round stoppage of Chad Dawson in a career-best performance at Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif., Ward also drew a whopping 1.3 million fans to his fight on HBO Sports, according to Nielsen Media Research figures.

That came despite going head-to-head with a Showtime offering that featured Lucas Mattysse against Ajose Olusegun. That fight, which was at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, attracted 344,000 viewers.

It was also a major gain for Ward from his previous fight, in which he decisioned Carl Froch on Dec. 17 in Atlantic City to win the Super Six World Boxing Classic title. According to Nielsen figures, the Ward-Froch fight on Showtime peaked at 580,000 viewers.

So, by jumping networks, Ward more than doubled viewership of his fights.

His performance also continued a strong run for HBO, which has attracted a million or more viewers for each of its World

    • Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp was booed at the Andre Ward fight, even though he wasn't there (AP)One of the traditions at nearly every major boxing event is for the ring announcer to read off a list of celebrities who are in attendance. The bigger the fight, the more A-list celebrities are usually at ringside.

Promoters were trying to position Saturday's super middleweight title fight between Andre Ward and Chad Dawson at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, Calif., as a mega-fight. Though it was significant from a boxing standpoint, matching the unquestioned best fighter from super middleweight against the unquestioned best from light heavyweight, it wasn't the kind of event that brought out the big names.

When the ring announcer listed L.A. Dodgers' outfielder Matt Kemp as among those in attendance, it generated a loud and vitriolic chorus of boos from the 8,500 in attendance. They were simply showing support for their local teams, whether it was the Oakland A's or the San Francisco Giants.

There was only one problem: According to what Kemp told the San Jose Mercury News, he was not at

    • Statue honoring the late Joe Frazier finally in the works

Joe Frazier died of cancer in 2011 (AP)It's almost impossible to believe that a statue of a fictional boxer has stood outside the Philadelphia Museum of Art since 2006, yet there is no tribute to be found anywhere in the city to the greatest Philly fighter of them all, Smokin' Joe Frazier.

Plans are underway to finally honor Frazier with a statue, Philly.com reported Wednesday.

Actor Sylvester Stallone commissioned the Rocky statue in 1982 (AP)Actor Sylvester Stallone commissioned the statue of himself in the role of the fictional fighter, Rocky Balboa, in 1982 while he was filming Rocky III. It has stood outside the Museum of Art for six years and is a popular tourist attraction.

But at Frazier's funeral in November, the Rev. Jesse Jackson expressed the outrage that many in the sport felt that there was no statue commemorating Frazier's legendary career.

Rocky is fictitious. Joe was reality. Rocky's fists are frozen in stone. Joe's fists were smokin'

Frazier was born in Beaufort, S.C., but was as Philly as the Eagles, soft pretzels and cheesesteaks.

    • Mike Tyson (L), promoter Don King and Evander Holyfield (R) pose before a fight (AP)Former heavyweight champions Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield are continuing to take advantage of their notorious history together, turning it into a marketing opportunity.

In  1997, in perhaps the most heavily hyped rematch of all time, Tyson lost his composure and bit off part of Holyfield's ear. At the time, that earned Tyson a $3 million fine and a ban from boxing.

Nowadays, the one-time superstars have turned it into a marketing opportunity.

Holyfield with a Tyson shirtOn Monday, Holyfield tweeted a photo of himself wearing a T-shirt bearing the image of Tyson's facial tattoo. He wrote:

@MikeTyson bit my ear and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.

Tyson is selling the T-shirt as part of the Mike Tyson Collection.

That followed on the heels of a Twitter exchange between them in June, in which Tyson helped Holyfield sell his Real Deal Barbecue sauce.

It's good that they can joke about it now -- Tyson apologized to Holyfield on "The Oprah Show" in 2009 -- but it was hardly a joking matter the night of the

    • Boxer Sergio Martinez canceled a public workout due to threats and vandalism (AP)It's a sign of the times that a boxer has to cancel an open workout for the media due to security threats, but that's what has happened Monday to middleweight Sergio Martinez.

A combination of threats made to him and the vandalization of a car parked in front of the home where he was living caused him to cancel a workout scheduled for Tuesday in Oxnard, Calif.

Promoter Lou DiBella said Martinez will do an open workout soon in Los Angeles to promote his Sept. 15 fight on HBO Pay-Per-View for the World Boxing Council middleweight title in Las Vegas against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

"This past weekend, Sergio received threats from an unknown source and the car [parked] in front of his home was vandalized," DiBella said. "Unfortunately, until we have a security team in place, we are going to have to suspend any and all public and media appearances for Sergio, including the upcoming media day scheduled [Tuesday] in Oxnard. We apologize to the media and fans who had planned on attending
