Barry Bonds arrived at the San Francisco Giants' camp at Scottsdale, Ariz., Monday morning for a scheduled weeklong stay to be a special instructor with his old team. It's the first time since 2007, his last season in the majors, that Bonds has worn a Giants uniform. He looks slimmer — but he has in recent history, no doubt in part because of his serious biking habit — and, somehow younger than in '07. Bonds invited every player on the roster to "pick my brain" while they had a chance, because he's not sure if coaching is for him.
He also answered questions about the Hall of Fame, saying he "without a doubt" should be in Cooperstown, but he had nothing to say to the voters who decided not to cast ballots for himself and other players tied to performance-enhancing drugs. Bonds, the all-time home run leader, got 34.7 percent of the most recent vote.
"You guys are all adults, I have no advice for you," Bonds told reporters.
He also didn't bite on a question about being unemployed in baseball since the '07 season.
"I don't even know what 'blackballed' really means," said Bonds, who continues to serve a sentence for federal obstruction of justice charges while appealing it.
Bonds revealed he has worked one-on-one with MLB players Dexter Fowler and Ryan Howard, and said that the Fowler experience helped nudge him toward briefly rejoining the Giants. That, and the welcoming attitude of manager Bruce Bochy.
"I don't know if I'll be good at this [coaching]," Bonds said.
One possible reason why not, he guessed: "Patience."
From earlier, video of Bonds arriving:
"Hey, guys," Bonds said to fans and cameras. Bonds refused autograph requests because, seemingly, he has "a meeting at 9 o'clock." This somehow will be used against him by certain columnists. Although, on that note, Bonds appears much slimmer than during the end of his baseball career. Even his head, somehow. Must be all the cycling. The bicycling!
Ahmad Fareed of CSN Bay Area took the video (h/t @BustedCoverage).
Bonds will work for per diem and travel costs (gas money? rental car?) but otherwise won't be paid for his help.
