Yankees sending A.J. Burnett to Pittsburgh?

US PresswireThe Pittsburgh Pirates made offers to pitchers Roy Oswalt and Edwin Jackson this winter, but both of them spurned the idea of moving to western Pennsylvania. Now the Pirates may have found their man.

Fox Sports reports that the team has had discussions with the New York Yankees about A.J. Burnett, who led the American League in strikeouts back in 2008 when he was with the Toronto Blue Jays. Since then, though, he's been a bit of a disappointment to many Yankee fans. Last season, he went 11-11 with a 5.15 ERA.

Fox notes, though, that the discussions "failed to progress and perhaps qualified only as due diligence." However, the Yanks may have more incentive to ditch the 35-year-old Burnett as spring training gets closer; the team could use a little financial wiggle room to add Eric Chavez and whatever left-handed bat (Raul Ibanez, Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui) they choose to sign, Fox notes. Burnett has two years and $33 million left on his deal. The Pirates, no doubt, would expect the Yanks to pay a big chunk of that if a deal were made.

Joe, I ain't got alotta dough, but I'll kick in a hundred bucks to send him packin'. He's just another example of a good ballplayer that goes into the dumper when he puts the pinstripes on. If Hughes stays healthy and Joba bounces back from surgery then we don't need A.J. Providing the Yankees don't have any major catastrophes in 2012, were good to go.

My guess is they will send him back.

If the Yankees eat $23 million or more and as long as the pirates don't give up a halfway decently rated prospect this is a good deal for Pittsburgh. AJ would do better in a change of scenery and an easier league. Also another player or 2 and the Pirates could possibly contend in the NL Central

of course any other team making a bonehead move by signing an over the hill player like the yanks did would be under for years in paying for the mistake...but unlike any other team the yankees can just go and buy another player to replace the overpaid mistake.

if the pirates take him it will lower the amount of money they make from the luxury tax.

Ya, what do the Pirates get out of this deal?

A successful playoff experienced veteran that has a decent chance of rebounding, especially with a change of scenery. At $4 million dollars a year, the Pirates cannot reasonably expect a near sure thing.

send him to the red sux for Big Papi...

Seems like everyone in baseball wanted Burnett before he ended up in NYC. Sorry to see someone drop so far in such a short time. Odd, too, how his rapid decline started as soon as he got to NY.

Mr B has been an enigma. Not a lousy pitcher, just too erratic and unreliable. Even if the Pirates don't take him, he needs to get out of the rotation.......and out of New York.

Whatever salary you can move off the books is good. AJ is a distraction and if the Yankees gotta eat 28 mil out of 33 then so be it. Yankees have too many other options to be worried about AJ getting his head out of his arse.

Make the deal Yankees! Even if you have to pay half of the remaining salary, do the deal! It'll free up the requisite money to sign Ibanez as the DH. That'd be perfect, his swing is tailor made for the right field porch. Forget about Burnett and the giant mistake we made signing him.

This guy had so much potential when he signed with the Yankees, what a shame, but He'll do much better in a small market!! However I don't think you can just give him away. remember the Pirates have a history of dumping veteran players at the trade deadline. Could you imagine The Red Sox or any other team picking him up and he helps the team get into the playoffs and World Series!!! The Yankees should dump him, but not give him away!!

I love that no one remembers how he used to kill the Yanks, that was why they got him.
