Yadier Molina hoping to stick with Cardinals

US PresswireYadier Molina enters the final year of his contract this season with the St. Louis Cardinals and it isn't clear if he'll go the way of the man whom he considers a big brother, Albert Pujols, or if he'll be rejoining the Cards in 2013.

The 29-year-old Molina is hoping an extension can be agreed upon before the season gets started, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, but he's unafraid to leave the team that drafted him back in 2000.

"I'm open to staying here," the four-time Gold Glover said, according to the Post-Dispatch. "I love the city. I love the fans. I love the ballpark. But it's out of my hands. Whatever they like to do is how it is. They let Albert go. It's business for the team, too. It's out of my hands."

Molina batted .305 with 14 homers and 32 doubles last year for the World Series champs.

"out of my hands", what a classic excuse to go for the money. There's little or no loyalty anymore. Fact is, there wasn't much loyalty when the owners controlled the game 100%. Too bad, loyalty is measured by $ signs. And you can't tell me that someone is going to make him an offer that the Cardinals can't come close to. If I'm $50K a year and someone offers me $75K, I'm gone. But if I'm make $8.9M and someone offers me $10M, I might consider staying. It would depend on personal factors, and possible post season opportunities. I'm just saying, "take responsibility for your actions, and don't pawn it off as if you have no control".

Maybe he isn't talking about the money. What if he is concerned about the years of his next contract? You really don't know where his mind is at. There are some people who look at the length and no trade clause as a sign of loyalty, look at Pujols. A 10 year contract with a no trade clause seems to be what he wanted. If the Cards would have started with that he wouldn't have left. He did turn down $275M for $254M and the not trade clause.
Do you question the teams loyalty when they decide not to resign a popular player because of age, injuries or a younger, cheaper player?

1.1mil is a lot to leave on the table.. if u dont want it, give it to your not so fortunate brother? I would move to another city if it meant some of my family members would not suffer.. if they are offering 1.1mil more... someone is going to get it, why not u.

it kind of is these days, the manger or owner will say it too. It's always in the hands of the dollar sign $$$$. Every man has his limit, wether he's the player, owner, coach, advertiser, distributor etc. etc.

The Cardinals are nuts if they let Molina hit the open market. He could end up with the Angels too.
    • Tracy 3 months ago
The Angels had the other 2 Molina brothers and we loved them both. All of the Molina's are class act individuals. We would love to have him play for us, but we are soo loaded behind the plate, it wont happen. I hope he stays with the red birds, they need him and he seems to want to stay.

politicians arent supposed to be playing ball....isnt that why they hire agents?

Its up to him if he signs or not. From the rumors around the ball park, he's not acting like he wants to be a Cardinal, he already missed a signing day for the fans! Which is unacceptable in my book. I would love to see him stay for all the right reasons and not because the Cardinals throw a lot of money his way. He should get paid what he is worth but he also needs to show us that he really wants to be a Cardinal for life and that is done through actions.

Yadi is Beast! imma pick him up again in fantasy bball!

"It's out of my hands." Not really. He could always take a modest hometown discount to stay with the Cardinals instead of taking the highest offer on the market. The Cardinals can certainly afford Yadi. But I think he wants top dollar.

Not sure about "top dollar", but he should be in the ballpark. He's the best defensive catcher in the game. On the other hand, since Albert was basically his hitting coach, his offensive numbers may dwindle (weren't great to begin with), which may bring his price down a bit.

But then again it might not be about the money. There is a good possibility that he might have a no trade clause at the top of his list. Saying he loves the city, fans and ballpark sounds like he would like to finish his career in St. Louis. The Cards need to give him the years he wants and other incentives for him to take a hometown discount.

We'll miss ya Yadi. Sounds like he's already got a foot out the door

I gotta feeling Albert has told him things that may or not be true, don't you?
  • Nic  •  3 months ago
That doesn't sound very promising. Hopefully I'm wrong.

St.Louis need to resign him before he become a free agent.

Yadi is probably the best all around player of the Molina brothers. The guy can hit and bring out the best of the superior Cardinal pitching staff.

I can make it easy for you Yada- just sign the contract !!!!

I'm still upset over Albert's decision to leave St. Louis. If he wasnt greedy he wouldve taken the 5 year 240 million deal and then say after the 3rd or 4th year extend it 3 years. That being said, I hope Yadi doesnt let money talk over where he has grown up.

im a huge cardinals fan but yadi will be throwin behind runners to albert in 2013. sucks bc yadi is a fan favorite in stl
  • Cardinal  •  , US Virgin Islands  •  3 months ago
Its the same drill, the Cards will not want to pay Yadi what he is worth. The fans should not talk about he's only interested in the money and no loyalty. He will be playing with Albert next year ( I cant wait).

I hope I'm wrong, but it sounds like he's out the door. The Cards best interest is to get what they can!!!

PS. Yadier is either one of the ugliest looking guys on the planet or one of the cutest girls from Latin America.
