Roy Oswalt returning to Phillies?

¨US PresswireA rumor circulated over the weekend that the Philadelphia Phillies could be interested in bringing back starting pitcher Roy Oswalt, who seems to have been shut out from the two teams that he preferred joining: the St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers.

CSN Philly notes that an Oswalt return to Philly seems highly doubtful since the team doesn't have much money to throw in his direction. After all, the team already has committed $168 million to 20 players next season. Plus, CSN points out, the back problems that put Oswalt on the disabled list twice last year "may also make him a risk the team is unwilling to take."

CSN also notes that "perhaps the clearest indication that Oswalt will not be back" is the fact that reliever Michael Schwimer has been given Oswalt's old number: 44.

The rumor is that Roy may be going back to Phillies; However all I read are the reasons why Roy will not be taken back to Phillies. Very misleading.....

Everybody is wary of Oswalt's health problems... If he gets an offer of 7 million or more he'd better pounce on it. Also he's too picky... I'd pitch in Siberia for 7 million a year.

The only way he goes to the Reds is by trading Homer Bailey.

Didn't the Phillies give Oswalt something like $2 million to drop the option on the last year of his contract ? That said, I still think that Oswalt is a better option as the Phils' # 4 or 5 starter than Blanton (injuries), Kendrick (still not fully proven) and Worley (sophomore year) . I'd like to see the Phils offer Roy-2 $3 Million with incentives that kick in after 20 starts. This gives the Phils an additional option at starting pitcher and gives Roy-2 a chance to prove he still has it without the pressure of being a # 1 or 2 starter. If he is successful this season then the Phils have Blanton or even Worley as deadline trade fodder or both Worley and Kendrick can go to the bullpen in the long relief / spot starter role. I wouldn't go anymore than $3 million for 1 year and I think the fact that Roy-2 is still job hunting proves that most clubs don't think he is currently worth the price tag is is asking.

Poor Roy, I thought that he'd be a big item in Philly. I just think the ill-fated attempt to help his family after the storms, (when he could've paid someone to do the job) took him out!!! He hurt his back, and everyone knows that a bad-back pitcher, has very little chance in today's MLB!!!

I think that the "Mississippi Gambler" in him, dealt him a bad hand!!! If the Phillies won't take him back, who will??? I was pulling for you all season long Roy, I was hoping that you'd turn the corner, but now; I think that the party is over!!! You might be smart to take the Phillies offer and work yourself back into shape!!!

i would love to see a healthy roy come back. at this point he will have to settle for a $5M deal with some incentives.

If Wainright cannot produce, the birds are going to regret not signing Oswalt
    • xmll11 3 months ago
first they won a world series last year without him so your wrong, and next oswalt wants to much

Certainly you're not suggesting Wainwright won't be better than Edwin Jackson was this year, Robert?

I have been a Bird fan since about 1936 and still believe in them. Pitching is still a Question..Tommy John victims are not always able to comeback..Good pitching is the backbone of a winning ball club. I think the Dodgers of the past had proven that. A rotation with Carpenter, Garcia, Wainright (if fit} plus Oswalt (if fit) would be awesome plus a dependable closer.

You'd think that going to a World Series contender would trump a couple million dollars...

Roys agent talked to the Reds and wanted 2 years and 17 million, like geez forget it. I have his scouting report in front of me and I upset alot of Philly fans two years ago when I said he lost his edge in Houston and was not a elite pitcher anymore. He once was a Reds killer but that was 4 years ago, those days are over. If he came to the Reds for 3 million plus incentives I would have thought okay lets buy some insurance but at 8.5 million per year forget it, we got Madson for that kind of money and I think we need to get Madson resigned for longer years before adding Oswalt to the mix.

I have burned some bridges here, yet I still post. I meant to say Philadelphia. Got smarts? I don't.

Roy Oswalt has burnt his bridges, I thought, in Philedelphia. He should take what Texas has to offer, where he is still loved.

Can he just not say Retire and go about his way,I mean its clear that know one is highly interested.

Oswalt needs to see the writing on the wall, if he wants to see the signature on his contract. He's a walking DL-visit, and nobody is guaranteeing $10M for that. How about a year and $3M with lots of incentives. At his age, if he's healthy, that could lead to a better 2-year deal for 2013-14 to wrap up his career. As a Cardinals fan, I'd love to have him for the right price. $10M is not that price!
