Red Sox unlikely to add starting pitcher?

US PresswireThe Boston Red Sox have been rumored to be after a starting pitcher for weeks now and the word has been that the team could sign Roy Oswalt or Edwin Jackson to one-year deals or trade for Gavin Floyd of the Chicago White Sox. Now ESPN has it that Sox GM Ben Cherington "said Wednesday night that it is unlikely the team will add a starting pitcher in the near future." Cherington isn't ruling it out, mind you, but thinks it is unlikely.

This came on the heels of a report earlier Wednesday that the Sox had a "great chance" of signing the 34-year-old Oswalt, who went 9-10 for the Philadelphia Phillies and took two stints on the disabled list with a hurting back last season.

Oswalt met with the Texas Rangers Monday and has no meetings scheduled with the Sox, ESPN notes. Oswalt is thought to want to join the Rangers or St. Louis Cardinals rather than the Sox, who are farther from his home in Mississippi.

"I'm not sure anybody but [Oswalt], his family and his agent know what he's going to do,'' a Red Sox source told ESPN.

Let the rumors come to you. Follow Scoop du Jour on Twitter or Facebook.

Cross Jackson off the list. Reports are he's signing with the Nats at some point this afternoon or evening.

Nats need some bats, not pitching.

No offense, but the Nats look a whole lot better overall for 2012 than the A's, both hitting and pitching. The A's two most "dangerous" hitters as of today are Kurt Suzuki and Johnny Gomes. Good luck with that.

The Red Sox WILL add a starter and I look for them to do it within the next week or so. Edwin Jackson has several offers on the table but if he really wants to prove his worth and go for a multi year contract for next year, what better place to prove himself than the AL East?

Remember Beltre? I'm a little wary about signing Oswalt after all the back problems. The last thing the Sox need is another name on the DL.

Completly agree with you. No way the sox go into spring training thinking that cook, silva, or padilla will somehow shine and brcome solid number 5 starters in an AL east division.

That's right... One of those three might could contribute if one of the starters gets injured and fill in for a while but I don't see any of them in the rotation. Lots of people are saying the new GM isn't doing anything but I like the way he is going about things, not announcing our every move to give other teams the chance to counter offer or drive up salaries. I like the sneaky way of signing players, why get into bidding wars?

If you read mlbtraderumors, you would have known that Boston has been after Jackson for weeks, offered him a $5-6million contract, and got turned down. Sneaky?

    Nats just signed Jackson...

I'm sure if they have on going negotiations with Jackson, Oswalt, and Chicago about Floyd, he's not going to say anything publicly to damage any progress or show his hand as to which direction they may be leaning towards going in. It's all just business strategy. Still a few weeks left until pitchers/catchers report for things to unfold.

John Lannan is available from the Nats. They want to dump his $5 million contract to help pay for E. Jackson. Decent lefty for the bottom of a rotation.

Ben Cherington is delusional if he thinks they can contend with that collection of arms which he thinks is a pitching staff. He's been a major disappointment as a GM.
    • The Rover 3 months ago
First off, he's been on the job only a few months. How can he be a "major disappointmen" already? What exactly did you want the Sox to do this offseason? They tried throwing $$ around the past 2 offseasons, and it didn't work. 3rd time's the charm right? They should've gotten Pujols, Wilson, Buehrle, and Reyes right?

      A "major disappointment"? Wow!
They are two months away from playing the season's first game - and the new GM is a disappointment? Good stuff. lol

I think the major disappointment of 2012 was Bobby V. Cherington is taking too much of the blame for the Sox collapse. Better luck in 2013.

I see Furdly is still here, thumbing down non-controversial baseball posts with his many yahoo accounts. Are you voting in the upcoming Arizona caucus?
    • str A's hooter 3 months ago
Real Deal, If you check Furdly's location, he's in Portugal. He so busy going from account to accout to harass the good posters, that he has no time to visit the beautiful countryside and shore of Portugal.

Real, what's happening on the Sox front? Maybe they can trade a couple sorry 4th year A guys for a front line pitcher. Sorry, only Yankee fans think that is happening.
  • str A's hooter  •  3 months ago
Boston's big back up first baseman, Lars Anderson is available. We almost got him until Boston balked on Hardin's health. Lannan for Anderson would be good for both teams and players.
    • The Rover 3 months ago
Wrong and wrong. Nats have Morse at 1B and if the Sox were going to trade for a starting pitcher, Gavin Floyd is the better, more proven option.
    • barnacle bill 3 months ago
      I'd rather have Floyd too...
    • It Came from Fresno! 3 months ago
NY Hooter knows Lars Anderson but not Joe Maddon? lmao!

Who gives a rat's #$%$ Does it really matter who pitches for the Red Sox? I hope they collapse again this year. May September haunt them forever!!!!!

I'm not exactly sure who this Cherington fella is, but what I do know is he very well may go down as the worst GM in MLB history, certainly Red Sox history! This offseason has been a joke! The collection of ragtag, has-been arms he's assembled couldn't hold a sub 4.00 ERA at Pawtucket! Seriously...Padilla, Cook, Maine??? And that's to help a long reliever, Aceves, and a 2nd year set-up man converting to a starter, Bard. Anyone forget that Beckett had his first healthy season in 3 years, Buchholz had back issues last season, that leaves Jon Lester as our 1 healthy, solid starting pitcher! If this GM had any sense about him, he wouldn't have traded Lowrie, I like the Scutaro dump, but now we have a platoon at SS. RF could've been handled alot better than signing Cody Ross. Beltran would have been a great fit! The back end of the bullpen looks ok, not great, but maybe just good enough to get by. I would've really like to have seen the Sox sign Beltran, trade for Matt Garza, Theo knows our prospects best-easy trade partner and the Cubs are rebuilding, and we could've also made arun at a decent IF to help out. All of this could've been done and still stayed under the Luxury Tax cap. Cherington should be running the Hot Dog stand for the Portland Sea Dogs, not making personnel moves for the Red Sox!!!

Since this is a baseball post, who is Brady? I know, utility infielder--right?
  • NAILS 4  •  Milton, Vermont  •  3 months ago
They will wait till July 31st and figure out what to do, probably will also at that point realize that NYY and TB are way to strong to fight. I think the Bo Sox will be sellers. U heard it first here.
  • Red Sox Fever  •  3 months ago
He may be playing a little mental advantage or ,even though you can never have enough pitching, they may already have enough which I believe they do.
