Red Sox offer Edwin Jackson one-year deal

US PresswireThe word was last week that the Boston Red Sox preferred to sign free-agent hurler Roy Oswalt to a deal. Failing that, they would try to trade with the Chicago White Sox for Gavin Floyd. And if that couldn't happen, the Sox would make an offer to Edwin Jackson.

If that's true, then the Sox are now on the third rung of their plan. The Boston Globe reports that the Sox have made a one-year offer to Jackson that is worth between $5 million and $6 million.

The Globe notes that Jackson is believed to have two multiyear offers on the table as well with one of them thought to be from the Baltimore Orioles. However, Jackson, who won a World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals last year after putting in a half season of work, wants to join a contender.

The 28-year-old went 12-9 with a 3.79 ERA for the Cards and Chicago White Sox last year.

I heard Selig is going to settle the dispute between the Cubs and Sox. Just a rumor....lame

He said that before the Christmas too, and now it's almost Valentine's Day. I had forgotten about it until The Herald had a little story about it in Monday's paper. I look at it like this: Boston goes to Chicago in late April for a 4 game series. Have the Cubs play for the team's hotel, airfare, a few cases of Old Style, and all you can eat deep dish pizza for the 4 days. Done and done. Play ball!!

Jackson is one of those players that never reached his "conceived potential". He has flashes of brillance, and then again flashes of being completly lost. He has never found any true consistency in his game. He's a nice fill for a staff, but wouldn't rely on him to carry a team.

That's why the Dodgers traded him a few years ago.

BOSTON ARE YOU REALLY THAT STRONG ON ONLY GIVING THIS GUY A ONE YEAR DEAL? YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING,WELL IF YOU GET HIM FOR ONE YEAR THEN I GUESS THAT'S GREAT BUT I THINK HE IS BETTER THAN THAT. EDWIN WISH YOU WERE STILL A CARD.

Considering your cardinals didn't even want him back why would you expect for the red sox to be thrilled to get this journeyman for multiple years. Make him prove himself like beltre did then let him go get paid next year if he performs and sox go after the legitimate pitchers available next offseason

Crash nailed it. The Sox are the only team make a public push for him. They're bidding against themselves, so why offer more than 1 guaranteed year? The Cards think both Lohse and Westbrook are better options in their rotations for the coming season. Neither are anything special, and that does not help make Jackson look any better.

You're forgetting that other than a slow start in April and a bad finish in September, even with serious injuries to Youkilis and bad play out of Crawford, this Red Sox team led the majors in win % for the other 4 months of the season. They failed to make the playoffs but they had 90 wins and aren't some team that's far off. This is a #5 starter we're talking about here... how much do you expect them to offer him?

I am thinking that Dav is really physically and mentally messed up and needs periodic treatment for his problems. During those times he is not allowed use of a computer. Get well Dav!!!!!!

Red Sox Fever is a puke too. Just like the rest of Dipchit and his scrubs. I love how he changed his name. I bet Real Deal would like his change. I haven't seen Real around. At least he talks about baseball most of the time. About 80% baseball....the other 20 fighting with you Turd or talking politics.

Maybe Jackson isn't quite a star. But Boston needs some depth. Matsuzaka and Bucholtz were on the DL most of last season, and Wakefield is gone. Jackson can win you 15 games and eat up some innings.

OK.. So Jackson really needs to prove himself worthy of a 3,4 or 5 year deal. Take into account he is only a .500 pitcher at 60-60 in his career. Also, I'm a little wary of his WHIP for his career at 1.48 and 1.44 last year.

But the guy is considered by many to have Number 1 stuff. He just hasn't proven it yet looking like a middle or 4 starter. He will eat up some innings though and that is what Boston needs right now. Who knows, he may start to reach his potential this year and at age 28, I think he has MUCH more potential for a great year than Oswalt.

Sign him Boston and he'll put you over the top, give him at least 2 years with options and incentive clauses or else you'll pay dearly to keep him after 2012.

What happened to the 12 to 15 million 5 year contract Boras was asking for him, one year 5 million is about right for this guy, when he pitched for the Cards he had some good and some bad innings but seldom pitched 6 good innings in a row, not consistent at all.

Would just like to say that I thought Myra Kraft did an amzing job singing the National Anthem in Foxboro for the AFC Championship game... even though there was a lot of negative feedback. Kudos Myra... keep it up

He's worth more than $6M and if he can get a multi-year guaranteed deal, he aint gonna sign with Boston - who are not contenders just yet anyway. A pitcher trying to prove himself should stay away from the AL East.

Could be big if he reaches his potential! I hope he signs, I wanted this guy over Oswalt

I see him going to Seattle. They need a # 2 guy now. Maybe for 2 years. They have money to burn (remember they were going to break the bank on Prince) but at least this signing could help out King Felix (if they don't trade him come July 31st). Don't see the M's doing anything in the monster AL West now, but they shouldn't finish 4th. You heard it here first if he goes to the M's.

Edwin Jackson is about the last big name star available on the open market. Boston is about the only team with money to spend and could use one more starter.
