Braves’ Chipper Jones not planning retirement tour

US PresswireChipper Jones, who turns 40 in April, will get paid $14 million this season, his 19th with the Atlanta Braves. The seven-time All-Star and 1999 National League MVP has also had surgery on both knees in the past two years. But don't plan on throwing him any retirement parties anytime soon.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Jones isn't ready to say that this could be his final season. His contract has a team option that pays him $7 million in 2013. If he appears in 123 games this season, that number automatically goes up to $9 million.

"As long as I stay healthy and I'm having fun, I'm going to keep going," he said Tuesday before taking part in an informal hitting session at Turner Field, the paper reports. "I sit here with three weeks to go before spring training and I'm not ready to say this is it."

Jones played 126 games last season, batting .275 with 18 homers, 33 doubles and 75 RBIs. Plus, his .976 fielding percentage was second among major league third basemen.

"I think if I struggle with the knee injuries again and I'm not having any fun, and if the team's struggling, obviously, I'll make that [retirement] decision when it hits me," Jones said, according to the Journal-Constitution. "As of right now, I'm signed through the end of this year and we've got an option for next year. I'm certainly going to take everything into account, but my body will tell me when that day comes. It'll be cut-and-dried."

That was a nice comment, Joe. I wish more fans had the positive attitude you poscess. Chipper truly is a model ballplayer that sets a good example for our youth.

I wouldn't say model person that sets good examples. Yes he is a model ballplayer, but he has cheated on his wife numerous times with women half his age

I didn't know that, Nick. Did you discover that inside information from National Enquirer?
All I know, for almost 20 years he played his heart out for one team.

Another Phillies fan who has great respect for Chipper. I hope he has a healthy and productive year (but not against the Phils) and I hope he get the chance to retire on his own terms.

I agree, Jim. I hope Chipper finnishes his career as a lifetime .300 hitter, as he deserves. He has struggled with injuries for a few years, and its good to see him healthy, again.

makes you wonder what the braves could do with the $14 million, Chipper is my favorite player but he hasn't proven he can still produce like he is capable of. You never know, I don't know what he was doing a few years back when he flirted with .400 until June or so but I wish he could find that groove again. Go Braves!!

As a Yankee fan, Chipper is great for baseball. Stay with it, Chipper.
(To think his Rookie of the Year award was stolen by Hideki Nomo)

"...my body will tell me when that day comes. It'll be cut-and-dried." Can you say Willie Mays?

Please for the love of god retire. You can only play 115-120 games maybe. You can't hit for power anymore and you move like Frankenstein at 3rd. You had a HOF career but you are hurting the team now.

With the Braves pathetic hitting he is still one of the hardest outs in the lineup, and he hit for power last year

come on people.........Chipper needed to retire 3 years ago .

yet ironically, he hit .364 in 2008

Spends way too much time on the DL . If he's that delicate, he needs to Retire .
I'm 65 years old and and no doubt could play more than Chipper does. For
him to hang around , he's just keeping some young talent from taking his place
and playing on a regular basis .......

Yeah I get mad when he goes on the DL, but for the past 5 seasons or so everyone else on the team spends just as much time on the DL, so it's hard to say he should retire, otherwise the whole team needs to retire. Besides, Bobby and now Freddie like to platoon so much you never would realize he misses so many games anyway
