Boston’s Bobby Jenks not returning soon

US PresswireBoston Red Sox reliever Bobby Jenks is in the middle of a two-year, $12 million contract and it appears that he'll be paid a large chunk of that money without throwing a single pitch. Manager Bobby Valentine said Monday that Jenks won't be back in team's lineup likely before midseason.

"Bobby said he'd like to take one week at a time,'' Valentine said, the Globe reports. "That means he's a long way about thinking baseball activities. He's really had a terrible offseason health-wise. He's a real back-burner guy. I don't think we'll see him in baseball activities for quite a while if at all this spring.''

Jenks was not in the lineup for the Sox last year after July 7 and made only 19 appearances for the team, during which he earned himself a 6.32 ERA.

Since last pitching, Jenks has had two surgeries in an attempt to fix up a spinal issue and has taken medication to dissolve a pulmonary embolism.

Great pick up for the Sox. Nothing like great scouting before signing him. It must've been the great shape he was in.

Not expecting anything from him this season anyways. If he is truly healthy by July, maybe it could work to be like a trade deadline pickup of a veteran middle reliever for the late summer playoff push. That, of course, is the glass half full outlook. The glass half empty outlook, which is probably more accurate, is the guy was downright awful last season, will make zero impact this season, and go down as a total bust during his ridiculously overpaid time in Boston.

Smart move taking it slow. Recovery from liposuction is not something you want to rush.

The Sox have Lackey, Dice K, and Jenks on the payroll this year, and there is a good possibility we won't see any one of them in uniform. The good news is that Dice and Jenks are in the last year of their contracts. The bad news is that Lackey has 3 more years.
