Angels’ Bobby Abreu looking to be traded?

US PresswireOutfielder/DH Bobby Abreu has played for four teams since entering the big leagues back in 1996: the Houston Astros, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels. Now the 37-year-old may be looking for a new team.

Abreu told ESPN Deportes Tuesday that he would like to be traded if he isn't going to be an everyday player, according to the Los Angeles Times; "I'm an everyday player; I can still be in the lineup for a major-league team," Abreu said, the Times reports. "I will not be on the bench knowing that I can play. If the Angels don't have a position for me, then the best thing is to trade me."

The Angels, though, want Abreu to be insurance "in case Kendrys Morales doesn't return from a broken left ankle and Mark Trumbo is slow to return from a stress fracture in his right foot," the Times reports.

The Angels' DH spot will mostly be filled by Morales and Trumbo while the outfield is filled up with Torii Hunter, Vernon Wells and Peter Bourjos.

Abreu batted .253 with eight homers and 60 RBIs last season for the Angels and is scheduled to make $9 million this year.

The stats they stated are mediocre, but he also had a .353 OBP and 21 SB which isn't horrible. Should be worth a full time job to some team out there.

Time to shut it down Bobby. You were a good player in your prime...Pop is gone, the hose is no longer, and the wheels are low on tread.

As an Angels fan, I would hope that he gets traded once, or if, Morales and Trumbo are healthy. But I can definitely see Abreu playing the first month of April and then him getting traded as I think Abreu deserves to have that request fulfilled.

Bobby Abreu is not a bench player quite yet. He deserves to play everyday. The $9 million salary will be hard to move though. Thats what's bad about getting tied down to a long term contract.

He did not have a "long term deal" it was a 2 year deal with an option for a third if he had a certain number of at bats during the first 2 years. 3 years is not long term.

Hooter, shut up. How much did you see him play last year? The guy is a class act but he is slow and afriad of the wall. He is a DH and that isa about it. He is insurance in Anaheim and that is about it.
      MP, Hooter is an idoit.

Who in the world wants a 250 hitter with no power that DH's most of the time for 9 million dollars.

.253 hitters with single digit HR totals and subpar defense probably aren't MLB starters...the Angles have it right Bobby.

Bobby Abreu is and always has been a class act. Best of luck to him, wherever he lands.

      I'll second that.

Dodgers, do you read this, why not give Abreu a try, who do we (Dodger nation) have to root for in LF?

You don't want that. I'm an Angel fan and his glove has really scarey. He is afriad of the wall.

He would never leave Doyer Stadium, that yard is too big for him. Rather have Rivera, Gwynn, or even Sands in left....

Yeah, everyone on the dodgers is better than him. Even the ballboy.

A 37 year old coming off career lows in the batting average, home runs and RBIs his only chance to be a starter will be because of injuries.

....uuummmmm....yeah....with stats like that you can make demands as you see fit!!

Abreu hasbeen a solid problem free player for the Angels and they should give him the chance to play everyday if some other team would like him-The Angels could use the salary relief and show their loyalty by accomodating a truly class act!

As if my Yahoo! avatar hasn't given my MLB team allegience away, I would like to see Bobby traded. Bobby has done well for us since we acquired him, but I feel his performance has been diminishing little by little as seasons pass. It's rough to deal with the notion of trading him because of the help he provided in the past, but it's even rougher to believe he can still produce like he used to. I'm not too sure how many teams will even want to start him in RF instead of offering him a DH spot due to his age, and his body may be too slow to run down those deep drives in the OF. I see a lot of 'Guerrerro to Texas' in 'Bobby traded elsewhere,' and starting Vlad didn't last too long, granted his body was/ is more beat up than Abreu's. As a die hard Angels fan I hope for the best for our club, but I also hope for the best with Bobby regardless of what happens because he's the type of guy any team would want on and off the field. But if that means trading Abreu to better ourselves, then I'm ok with that move. I really enjoy watching Bobby bat and I hope he stays with us, but I feel batting is all he can really do when it comes to being effective for a club.

At this point, he is a DH and a RF in case of disaster. He isn't going to play in front of Torii in RF or in front of Wells's $20 mil plus deal. My thought is, someone, most likely an AL team, will want him at the break. He's a good guy but there isn't any room for him as a starter in Anaheim.

I think Bobby still got some fuel left in the tank! Best of luck to him wherever he lands.
