Thursday in the U.S. Open, Jordan Spieth made four birdies on Pinehurst No. 2 for a 1-under 69, four shots behind tournament leader Martin Kaymer. “I wouldn’t trade the position I’m in,” Spieth said.

A year ago, Spieth had to qualify for the U.S. Open, and his stay at Merion didn’t last long. He had rounds of 77-76 to miss the cut.

The 20-year-old finished Round 1 at the U.S. Open just four shots off Martin Kaymer's lead. Spieth was joined at 69 by Brandt Snedeker, Henrick Stenson, Matt Kuchar, Brendon Todd and Hideki Matsuyama.
