Hurricanes’ re-signing Tuomo Ruttu?

US PresswireThe rumor has been that the Eastern Conference's worst team, the Carolina Hurricanes, would be looking to deal soon-to-be-free-agent forward Tuomo Ruutu before the Feb. 27 trade deadline is apparently not quite right.

TSN reports that the tem is trying to sign Ruutu to a long-term deal before then and if he isn't interested in signing on by the end of next week, then he'll be sent packing. Discussions have already taken place between the two sides about the potential deal, the site notes.

"So our priority now is to try and re-sign him," said Hurricanes GM Jim Rutherford, according to TSN. The 28-year-old left wing has 17 goals and 11 assists so far this season.

TSN points out that Hurricanes defenseman Tim Gleason, who was scheduled to become a free agent this summer also, signed a four-year deal.

Sean - its a matter of knowing the situation. The Hurricanes work with an AHL budget and already need a scoring winger in addition to Ruutu. Its easier for them to secure a winger already in the system who likes the area than try and buy one ala free agency when the bidding for services becomes steep. They got to lock down Ruutu or its going to be a prospect laden team even more so than currently.

I think the canes are not playing this to smart. They're in Last place in the East. Trade and get picks or Prospects or both. If they sign him what's going to make the team better for next year? Got to think with your head not your Heart.

Who cares? Why is there so much focus on Ruutu? He's not even that good of a player to be getting all this media attention... geez
