Steelers losing wide receiver Mike Wallace?

US PresswireIt used to be that teams that signed a restricted free agent would need to fork over a first- and third-round draft pick, but the new CBA only requires that teams send over a first-round pick if such a situation should arise.

The Washington Post notes that this is looking likely to happen in a few weeks when Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace tips into the restricted-free-agent category.

The Steelers are already about $10 million over the salary cap, the Post notes, and franchising Williams would cost the team about $9 million more. The franchise tag could still come down on Wallace, forcing the team to make cuts elsewhere, the Post points out, but it is more likely he'll be a restricted free agent soon.

The 25-year-old Wallace, selected in the third round of the 2009 draft and was the team's rookie of the year that same year, went to his first Pro Bowl after racking up 1,193 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns this past season.

They may not have the choice they are 7 million over the cap and still have players they are loosing to FA and players they are drafting they have to pay

Is this article about Mike Wallace or Mike Williams? Who is Williams?
"and franchising Williams would cost the team about $9 million more."

He will be there next year, he's their best reciever and one of the best recievers in the NFL...they'll find away to keep him!

Steeelrs management already stressed their intentions to keep him, players have already restructured, and other players are going to be released. I would be absolutely shocked if he isn't a Steeler next year.

I hate to break it to haters but first wallace isn't going anywhere, most winning teams are in the same spot as the steelers aka cap issues. Due to the uncapped year. Even the pats, so forget that one.
Even if he did leave the reason he had such a good year is because of the rest of the help around him. Antonio brown and Emanuel saunders are very good and took the pressure off him, I even think brown is actually the better over all receiver and that is from my understanding the consensus in the league. If you watch the game film brown became the go to guy 1/2 way into the season. Wallace is a burner but he drops balls too which is why brown was the clutch guy on 3rd down. We would gladly take your Number 1 pick for him give our deep position at wr and our lack of Oline, CB and D line man.
Furthermore, he wants a ring, he isn't going to get a better shot at that anywhere in the league other then pittsburgh. So yeah, nice wishes but keep dreaming.

First of all the Pats have about 20 million in cap room. And welker and Green-Ellis are the only FA they have and you dont think they can make room for wallace. Come On. BTW the broncos have $50 million in cap space so I wouldnt be so sure. You can be reassured that no team is going to trade a top 20 pick for him and still have to pay him but outside of that the pats or broncos could easily make an offer.

Guess what everyone wants a ring but few will sacrifice cash to get it

Chris Chase writing under another pen-name.... dumb azzzzzz....I hope this Williams guy can play....

The Browns have plenty of Cap space to sign you Wallace. The Steelers will be sufficiently weakened with cuts if they franchise you. This and they can't sign their draft picks. You'll be a #1 on the Browns.

He is the number 1 for the Steelers. I could be a number 1 on the Browns.
    • johnson 2 months ago
A inside source says the Browns will get him if not franchised which will break the Steelers. Either way, the Steelers lose.

I could be a number 1 on the Browns and I have no legs and one short arm. At least I will fit in with the short arm. Wallace #1 receiver on most NFL teams.

The Bears have all kinds of money to spend, and have a track record of missing on 1st round picks. I don't think this is too difficult of a decision to make.

I second that amendment. What a duo that would make. Mr. Moss would be forgotten again.

The Steelers are known to have players and make them starz...K. Greene, G. Loyd, C. Brown, Y. Thigpen, K. Stewart, P. Burrges, S. Holmes(SPMVP), N. Washington, and so on and now M. Wallace well if he has to go well he has to go,,,,I would love for him to stay since he is a deep threat but the guy cant run post or slants just deep ballz...with Brown and Saunders you still have the deep ball threat but you also have the slant and post routes that those receivers can run and do....look at the SP vs Packers last 2 minutes of the game Wallace couldnt do what Holmes did vs the Cardinals slants and post routes..so he has to go...Wallace with the speed he has he just should of book it go deep on every play who knows the outcome would of been different even if he was cover it would of take double or triple coverage and that would leave you Ward, Miller, Brown or Mendenhal open for short passes in that game instead Ben kept looking for Wallace with short slant and posts slant......Wallace would be great with Houston, Colts (only if Peyton remains QB), Saints, Patriots, Cardinals, Eagles, Bears, Chargers those teams have QBs that want to air it out,,,Packers would benefit alot from him but dont need him...But I would say trade him make some salary cap and get some OG, LT, RT, RG, LG get an offense line that can protect Ben, maybe 1DB, 1CB, 1SS, 1LB we need to start to rebuild.....

The Steelers are in a really good position when it comes to Wallace (who probably doesnt want to leave the Steelers anyway). He is entering the final year of his contract, which means he is a RFA, thusly the Steelers have the option to match any bid for him. It makes no sense to franchise tag him and make him among the top 5 WRs in the game; which would subsequently increase his annual salary from less than 1mill/year to 9mill/for one year.

Odds are, they will continue to release veteran players and restructure deals internally to make room for a long-term deal with Wallace. Expect guys like Ben, Harrision, Troy and even Ward to restructure/reduce their annual base pay to make room for Wallace.

If none of that works, then expect the Steelers to place a "franchise tender" offer on Wallace, which will keep him for the 2012 season and will force teams to give up a 1st and 3rd round pick for signing him, which NO TEAM will do.

At the end of the day, Wallace will sign a long term deal and will remain in Pittsburgh for at least another 5yrs.

Theres a reason the saying goes "taking the Browns to the Super Bowl" when somebody has to poop.
  • Matt Kerr  •  Berea, Kentucky  •  2 months ago
What a joke of an article. And he's not going anywhere. They'll release every free agent except him just to keep him. Brown and Wallace are going to be the new faces of an aging steelers team. Sorry Steeler haters. Lol
