Oden not retiring

US PresswireSince being drafted first overall by the Portland Trail Blazers back in 2007 out of Ohio State, the 24-year-old has played only a total of 82 games due to series of unfortunate injuries.

Now he's recovering from his second microfracture surgery on his left knee in two years (his fifth knee surgery overall), which will sideline him for the rest of this season and the first half of next. A source tells Sports Illustrated that Oden has no plans to retire at this point.

"It's hard to put into words the heartbreak for everyone involved, but especially for Greg," said Blazers president Larry Miller, according to SI.com. "He's a young man who has experienced a great number of physical challenges in his playing career and today is yet another significant setback for him. We have a lot of empathy for Greg and his family during this difficult time."

In the games he has played, Oden has averaged 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.9 personal fouls and 1.4 blocks per game. SI points out that Oden has earned $23 million from the Blazers so far.

I'm beginning to think Oden is not really 24 yrs old. I'm thinking he's closer to being 50.

As long as there are Teams like Portlant. who like to give out millions of dollars.
This guy is not going to retire. If I was a Portlant fan I will be asking the head of
the idiot that sign this guy this year. Coud have made a good team better,
by signing a real Basketball player!!!!

Oden sure picked a good time to go into the draft. Now whether or not he will ever play again is a mystery. Just do everyone a favor out there. Do not become one of these losers like Allen Iverson or Antoine Walker and become a broke fool. The $23 million you earned *cough* should last you the rest of your life. Get an experienced money manager and dont be involved in the ghetto fabulous lifestyle of spending and splurging on the "homies". They wont hesitate on leaving once the cash is gone. You dont want to be in the company of Iverson and Walker.

Oden retired in 2007. Did you see him play? He's slow and not very intimidating in the paint. for a 7+footer he has no length and his offensive skills are offensive. He can dunk! That's it...no shot outside of zero feet! Oden's will be remembered as one of the biggest busts in sports history.

of course, he's making easy money..yea it sucks to have knee surgeries and rehabbing.. but 9 mil to do that...
    • EJ 2 months ago
He took a pay cut to 1.5 by the way
    • MDDLupFNGZ 2 months ago

It's not normal for kids in their early 20s to experience a mid-life crisis. Let him do what he wants to do.

Keep in mind that as he takes these million dollar contracts, he limits his bipedal future.

I wouldn't retire either if teams kept paying me not to play.
  • D  •  2 months ago
WHY should he retire?! He's got a sucker organization on the hook that has paid him $23 million plus for playing what barely amounts to a single season's worth of games over a five year period!! Hell i'd try to keep them on that hook too!!

did he want me to grease it?

Portland has to be the stupidest team in the NBA! They need to get some kind of a return on their substantial investment in this guy. He could pass out programs, run the hotdog cart, clean gum from the bottom of chairs. Give them something Greg, please give them something!

WOW...READING THIS ARTICLE HAD ME LAUGHING...DOES THE 76ERS HAVE THAT MUCH MONEY TO GIVE AWAY? WHY NOT GIVE SOME TO ME!!! I CAN HOBBLE AROUND WHILE THEY KEEP GREASING MY PALMS WITH MONEY!!! 76ERS ARE REALLY BETTING THE TEAM ON THIS GUY....I HOPE (LONGSHOT) THAT HE CAN COME BACK FROM ALL OF HIS REHAB BUT MY GUESS IS THAT HIS DAYS OF PLAYING BASKETBALL IS OFFICIALLY OVER...HE IS ONLY GETTING OLDER AND SO WILL HIS KNEES!!!

  • Boydree74  •  Hanover, Maryland  •  2 months ago
Greg, Here's the perfect plan: Step aside right now, and let Pryz have your slot. Then Promise Portland, that , when you are ready to play, you will be back for them, to repay all the support and faith they have given you for these 5 years. Then, get fit, work hard, and come back to participate on the Blazers Championship run!
