Celtics’ Rajon Rondo headed to Lakers?

US PresswireThe Los Angeles Lakers are in need of a point guard and the word is that the team wouldn't mind doing a deal with the Boston Celtics to land Rajon Rondo.

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak tells Lakers.com that there is definitely something he'd like to do before the trading deadline: "If there were a way for us to get a 25-year-old, All-Star, ball-handling guard we'd love to do it … but that's not likely in February. So you look at other alternatives, and see if it's better than what you have. That's all."

As Hoopsworld points out, Rondo is the only 25-year-old, All-Star, ball-handling guard in the league right now. Sources also tell the site that, in exchange for Rondo, the Celtics "have interest" in forward/center Pau Gasol, who has two years left on his contract after this season.

Gasol is averaging 16.4 points, 10.1 rebounds and 0.5 blocks per game. Rondo is averaging 13.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 9.8 assists per game for the Celts.

Our three-peat team didn't exactly have a great PF, we a great role-player, if we can get Bass in the trade as well it could work out well, since we can't seem to defend any of quick pg's that face. Although the thought of a Celtic becoming a Laker is appalling. Regardless something good will happen in the next couple of weeks.

What a nightmare. The Lakers don't deserve an unselfish player like Rondo. Just hold on to what you got and let Kobe's ball hogging get you swept out of the playoffs 2 years in a row.

Trade the Lakers bench for Jeremy Lin. Double his pay if they have to. Problem solved.

why would any laker fan want to see rondo wearing their colors and root for him? Yikes.
    • x 3 months ago
If they want another title they would. I'm sure Lake Show fans got over seeing Malone and Peyton in Laker colors. Too bad Kobe threw up a ton of bricks that year.

laker fans wants to have a good or probably an allstar pg.may it be a celtic or from any rival team as long as it can help and solve the pg issues of the team

Rondo can't shoot but that is something that can be developed later on his career through repetition, repetition, repetition. Both Westbrook and Rose have dramatically improved their mid to long range shot since entering the league. On the flip side Rondo probably has the best perimeter D of any PG in the league, he is the best rebounding PG in the league, and he just makes people better around him. Rondo should be able to play at a high ability for another 10 to 12 years. Gasol only has 4-5 years of top level production left in him.

The only trade that would make sense is Bynum for Rondo yet I don't think either team would do that. Bynum is too much of an injury risk to basically invest in him being the face of the franchise yet Bynum is also too good to trade for a PG which is a position that isn't one of importance in the Laker's current offensive system. Kobe is the ball handler. At point guard they need a guy who can hit open jumpers and take over ball-handler duties when Kobe goes to the bench. A guy like Arenas or Kirk Hinrich, Luke Ridnour, Jose Calderon, Jordan Farmar, Jarrett Jack, Mo Williams, George Hill, or Jerryd Bayless would fit the description perfectly. Lakers run a half-court, post up, inside-outside offense. An elite point guard is not necessary.

lakers knew they needed a point guard early in season yet their loyalty to fisher would not allow them to get rid of him ,also need to get rid of walton

what a bunch of #$%$ Kupchak made an offhand remark that he'd like to have a 25 year old all star ball handling guard (who wouldn't) and the author of this piece went on a spree trying to find someone to fit the bill and deciding who the Lakers would trade ("sources" also tell the site). I'm sure Kupchak would like an all star small forward too...must be trying to trade for LeBron James for Kobe. Whatever...pure speculation!

Life after the triangle: Get fast PG upgrade. Get outside shooters. Dump a tall PF who costs $18M per season and contributes like a $12M player.

Anyone besides me see a disturbing pattern in Boston pro sports?

For the Celtics, the team is suffering because of bad trades and personnel moves by Danny Ainge. Ostensibly meant to boost offense (Jeff Green certainly doesn't do defense), the moves backfired. Of course, we won't know if the draft pick we got from Cleveland for Semih Erden and Luke Harangody will work out. JaJuan Johnson is still too raw. While Harangody is running up frequent flyer miles between Cleveland and the D-League, we certainly could use Erden right now.

And, now we have the Red Sox. Ben Cherington takes over for Theo Epstein. He trades away Josh Reddick for a pitcher and then reveals that Ryan Kalish had major arm surgery back in November and may be out up to the all-star break. To compensate for this mistake, Cherington trades away Marco Scutaro to free up salary to get Cody Ross. But, Scutaro was the only real shortstop on the roster because Jed Lowrie had been released (with good reason) and no one down in Pawtucket is ready to be promoted.

Even with the Ross addition, the Bosox are looking at only having Jacoby Ellsbury as a regular outfielder. Carl Everett and Kalish will be recuperating from surgeries to start the season, leaving Cody Ross to share time with Darnell McDonald and possibly with utility infielder Mike Aviles. Of course, Aviles will probably have to handle shortstop, still leaving us thin in the outfield. All of this started with bad moves by Cherington.

As a Boston fan, I can only hope the Bruins don't fall into the same trap and that Bill Belichik re-signs Wes Welker and drafts well.

I will trade Rondo this Friday to the Lakers for P.Gasol because they need another 7 footer in the lineup next to KG. During All-Star Break Ainge need to make a 3 team trade with Milwaukee & Charlotte. Boston get B.Jennings,Milwaukee get DJ Augustin & M.Carroll,Charlotte get Bradley,Dooling,Johnson, & 2012 1st round pick. In March Ainge should trade Moore,Daniels,Wilcox, & 2nd round pick to Phoenix for S.Brown & R.Lopez. Ainge should waived J.O`Neal & S.Pavlovic. After the deadline Ainge should sign A.Brooks,J.Posey, & R.Wallace for 1 year. With 10 shooters on the Celtics team they can come out the East.

The Lakers seem so focused on the need at point guard, they are willing to create a need at Forward?!! Either need is going to keep them from going far in the playoffs this year. Why not build for next year? Wait for the possibility of acquiring D. Will. Please Mitch, do not make such a stupid trade! Why are the Celtics trying to get rid of this guy? Team chemistry
issues, plus he can't shoot. The Lakers need a better long range scoring threat.
